Job Description

The Department Supervisor provides technical and operational support to the laboratory while participating in daily sample production and data review. Responsibilities include scheduling and prioritizing work tasks, training staff, problem‑solving, implementing new procedures and methods, analyzing samples, reviewing and validating data, and completing reports.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
  • Coordinate work projects with project managers to appropriately prioritize laboratory workload to meet client requirements.
  • Manage in‑house projects for an assigned department to ensure on-time delivery and turnaround times are met.
  • Release samples to laboratory personnel and communicate due dates and updated turnaround times.
  • Supervise analysts to maximize productivity and ensure compliance with testing procedures, quality assurance, and standard operating procedures.
  • Communicate department issues and provide status reports to Lab Management and Project Managers.
  • Assist the Department Manager in evaluating individual performance and providing ongoing feedback to lab personnel.
  • Ensure proper training of new analysts and develop staff on skills, equipment, and procedures.
  • Prepare department reports as assigned by laboratory management.
  • Track department productivity.
  • Conduct department safety inspections to maintain EH&S requirements.
  • Contribute to hiring and firing decisions.
  • Stock and order supplies as needed.
  • Dispose of samples according to EH&S requirements.
  • Clean work area(s) to maintain a safe working environment.
  • Assist other laboratory departments as needed.
  • Prepare and analyze samples for analysis based on method requirements.
  • Review data produced in the assigned department and authorize its release.
  • Operate, maintain, and repair sophisticated analysis instrumentation requiring advanced and specialized knowledge.
  • Create and update department standard operating procedures.
Qualifications

Education/Experience

  • BS/BA in Chemistry or a related field.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in a laboratory setting.
  • Professional working proficiency in English (reading, writing, speaking).
  • Authorization to work in the United States without restriction or sponsorship.

Ideal candidates will have experience with

  • GC/MS purge & trap instrumentation.
  • EPA methods for the analysis of soil and water matrices.
  • Quality assurance plans.
  • Laboratory standard operating procedures.
  • Laboratory safety rules and chemical hazards.
  • Maintenance of laboratory instruments.
  • Advanced knowledge of laboratory procedures.
  • Effective supervisory and management skills.
  • Knowledge of government contracting regulations.
  • Good communication skills.
  • Computer skills.
  • Strong organizational and time‑management skills.
  • Problem‑solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete work within time and quality constraints.
  • Experience leading and training employees.
Additional Information

Full‑time position, Monday – Friday, 8:00 am – 5:00 pm, with overtime as needed. Candidates living within commuting distance of Tinley Park, IL are encouraged to apply.

Pay range: starting at $25.00–$35.00 per hour.
