Position: Custodian - (10:30pm-7:00am)

Position Overview

The Custodian Shift position involves performing routine custodial tasks in a designated area. Responsibilities include sweeping and mopping floors, vacuuming carpets, dusting and cleaning offices and classrooms, disinfecting restrooms, stripping, waxing, and polishing floors and furniture, and collecting and removing trash.

Work schedule:

Sunday – Thursday, 10:30 pm to 7:00 am.

Job Description
  • Office, Classroom and Facilities Maintenance (40%) – Vacuum, bonnet, and extract carpeted areas with appropriate equipment and chemicals. Dust mop and clean tile floors using wet mops; remove stains and spots with semi‑automatic scrubbers. Empty trash and replace liners, especially in research and lab areas. Dust furniture, blinds and surfaces; clean glass, ledges, and dry‑marker boards. Some locations require bio‑hazard precautions.
  • Hallways, Stairways, Elevators, Entrances and Exteriors (15%) – Dust mop and scrub resilient surfaces; burnish floors. Conduct wet mop spot cleaning on tiled areas and floor mats; clean walls, doors, carpets, jam rooms, and kickplates. Wash windows and rails; dust and polish surfaces. Clean fire extinguisher cases and report damaged equipment. Maintain exterior entrances, remove snow and ice when necessary, and check handicap access ramps.
  • Floor Maintenance (15%) – Strip floors; chemical detergent scrub on non‑carpeted areas. Burnish tile; bonnet and deep extract carpets. Clean specialty floors—wood, cork, quarry tile—using automatic equipment. Follow safety procedures to avoid injury.
  • Restroom/Shower Cleaning (15%) – Clean and disinfect sinks, stools, urinals, sanitary napkin receptacles, and trash containers. Polish fixtures and wet mop floors. Replace soap and paper goods; scrub walls; use semi‑automatic scrubbers. Acid clean urinals and toilets. Follow standard safety procedures.
  • Supplies, Chemical and Equipment Maintenance (5%) – Minor maintenance on hand tools and mechanized equipment such as burnishers, scrubbers, dry/wet vacuums. Report major malfunctions. Properly mix chemicals and follow safety procedures.
  • Other Related Work (5%) – Lock and unlock building doors; assist with special events and emergencies; report repair needs; handle found items per policy; raise and lower flags; attend training sessions and meetings; assist with snow removal.
  • Additional Duties – Perform other related tasks as assigned (5%).
Position Requirements
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 30 pounds frequently and up to 50 pounds occasionally.
  • Ability to bend, stoop, and kneel frequently.
  • Ability to work on step ladders.
  • Physical strength to stand the strain of long custodial shifts.
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed.
  • Willingness to work under extreme temperature and weather conditions.
  • Not eligible for immigration sponsorship.
Required Qualifications

None required.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, and practices in cleaning operations.
  • Custodial experience in large residential or commercial buildings.
  • Experience with vacuum cleaners, floor scrubbing machines, polishing machines, and other janitorial equipment.
  • Advanced training in custodial and high‑volume cleaning operations.
  • Experience interacting with customers and/or the public.
