Position: **INTERNAL ONLY** Lead Custodian (10:30pm - 7am)

Position Overview

The Lead Custodian position is responsible for maintaining cleanliness and sanitation across bath facilities, common areas, entrances, and ensuring a safe and welcoming environment. In addition to performing custodial duties, the Lead Custodian provides direction and training to custodial staff, reinforces workflow and quality standards, leads project and floor care teams, assists with training, and supports staff with computer‑based tasks. The role also manages supplies and equipment, maintains inventory, and ensures proper storage and maintenance.

University vehicle operation is required.

70% – Custodial Duties
  • Bath Facilities:
    Clean office, classroom and facilities areas – vacuum, treat carpeted areas, dust mop, wet mop tile floors, spot clean stains, discard trash, clean containers, replace liners, dust furniture, blinds, surfaces, clean glass, ledges, chalkboards, handle biohazard work as needed.
  • Hallways, Stairways, Elevators, Entrances and Exteriors:
    Dust mop, scrub and burnish resilient surfaces, wet mop spots on tiled areas and floor mats, spot clean walls, doors and carpets, wash windows and rails, dust and polish surfaces, clean fire extinguisher cases, report damaged/equipment, maintain exterior areas and handicap ramps.
  • Floor Maintenance:
    Strip floors, apply chemical detergent scrubs in non‑carpeted areas, burnish tile floors, deep‑extract carpeted areas, maintain specialty floors such as wood, cork, quarry tile, and follow safety procedures.
15% – Lead Custodian

Directs other employees while performing similar duties. Provides training and support to team members, ensures quality standards, reinforces workflow, completes tasks efficiently and safely. Works directly with custodial staff, leads project and floor care teams, trains workers in materials, equipment, methods, and safety, assists supervisors in yearly training workshops, helps with computer tasks, participates in in‑service training, and serves on the emergency phone rotation.

10%

– Supplies, Chemicals and Equipment Maintenance

Ensures availability of tools, materials and equipment, provides proper storage, maintains inventory, follows safety policies, records equipment usage, keeps supply rooms neat, performs daily tool maintenance, uses chemicals to MSDS specifications, cleans storage and operation areas.

5% – Other Assigned Tasks

Performs additional cleaning or maintenance duties as assigned, moves equipment and supplies across campus, assists with snow removal and surface treatment, writes work orders, estimates time and materials, informs supervisor of progress, and reports performance and conduct.

Position Requirements
  • Lifting up to 30 lbs frequently and up to 50 lbs occasionally, with accommodation if needed.
  • Bending, stooping or kneeling frequently.
  • Physical strength to stand for long hours of custodial work.
  • Willingness to work overtime as needed.
  • Willingness to work under extreme temperatures and weather.
Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Three years of hands‑on custodial experience.
  • One year of floor‑care experience, including scrubbing, stripping, waxing hard‑surface floors and carpet cleaning with shampoo/extract equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license at time of hire and maintained throughout employment.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Custodial experience in large residential or commercial buildings.
  • Advanced training in high‑volume custodial and cleaning operations.
  • Experience interacting with customers or the public.
  • Leadership experience and/or training.
