Heavy Equipment Operator II Fire Management

Department of Natural Resources

Hourly Wage: $15.74-$17.72/Temporary/Full-Time

Primary function of the position is the operation of heavy equipment such as truck-tractor, lowboy, and crawler tractors. During periods of fire operations, the operator will operate equipment on fire-line and maintain equipment in a ready-to-go condition. During periods of fire preparedness duties will include road and trail clearing. Position and length of employment is dependent on funding through Fire Management Planning Analysis (FMPA).

Examples

of Work Performed

Maintains assigned fire operations equipment in a ready-to-go condition. Operates heavy equipment, including truck-tractor lowboy combination and crawler tractors. Prepares reports and maintains equipment logs as required.

May be detailed for short periods to other jurisdictions to assist in fire operations activities.

May be required to attend various fire-training seminars, schools, and conferences as conducted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, United States Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management and Tribally sponsored workshops for training purposes as available funds permit.

Works with other fire management officers and fire control workers on Fire Prevention for various schools and programs.

During fire season employee will be subject to adjusted work week, extended/irregular and high stress work hours, due to emergency situations, and will be required to work weekends and holidays.

Will be exposed to hazardous work environments involving heavy smoke, dust, extreme heat, and cold.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

Knowledge and use of the different sets of controls for operation of the equipment and attachments.

Knowledge of the nature of soil and features of the terrain to determine the proper approach to the condition of the surface and subsurface.

Knowledge of purpose for and the limitations of a variety of machines, equipment and their attachments.

Skill in handling controls to perform work is necessary. Frequently these controls share handles at the same time, requiring good hand, foot, and eye coordination. Also, good depth perception and a high degree of concentration are required.

Must be able to move equipment about in confined areas.

Minimum Requirements

High School diploma or equivalent.

Must have at least one year of experience in operating heavy equipment and machinery.

Required to pass pre‑employment drug test.

Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License with CDL endorsement with the ability to obtain a Yakama Nation Driving permit.

Required to take and pass physical examination for fire operation duties.

Required to pass the physical Pack Test at the moderate level.

Enrolled Yakama Preference, but all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply.

Position and length of employment is dependent on funding through Fire Management Planning Analysis (FMPA).
