Boiler Operator​/Maintenance Repairer

Mercer County is seeking a skilled and safety-conscious Boiler Operator to support Buildings and Grounds operations across County facilities. Under direction, the Boiler Operator is responsible for the safe, efficient operation, monitoring,and minor repair of stationary steam boilers, steam generators, and related auxiliary equipment used to heat and support public buildings.

This position plays a critical role in maintaining reliable building operations, ensuring compliance with safety standards, and supporting a clean, safe, and efficient mechanical environment.

• Operates and monitors stationary steam boilers, steam generators, and auxiliary boiler equipment in accordance with safety regulations and established procedures.
• Fires boilers using automatic stokers, hand firing methods, or oil burners and regulates fuel flow as required.
• Controls valves, feed pumps, pressure gauges, and draft systems to maintain proper boiler operation.
• Maintains appropriate water levels, pressure, temperature, and draft conditions to ensure efficient and safe performance.
• Performs minor repairs and routine maintenance on boilers, grate units, tubes, caps, pumps, motors, and related equipment.
• Conducts basic boiler water tests and operates water conditioning equipment as needed.
• Records fuel usage, pressure readings, temperatures, steam flow, and other operational data in logs and records.
• Responds to equipment malfunctions and makes emergency repairs to maintain continuous operation.
• Maintains boiler rooms, pump rooms, furnace rooms, and adjacent areas in a clean, orderly, and safe condition.
• Reports equipment damage, safety concerns, or low fuel supply promptly to appropriate personnel.
• Assists with general maintenance tasks, including cleaning, minor repairs, and grounds upkeep when required.
• Learns and utilizes electronic and/or manual recordkeeping and computerized systems used by the County.
• Performs related duties as assigned to support facility operations.

• Applicants must possess a current, valid Black Seal Boiler Operator License of the appropriate type (high or low pressure) issued by the New Jersey Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
• Appointees will be required to possess a valid New Jersey driver's license only if operation of a vehicle is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

• Knowledge of the operation, maintenance, and repair of stationary steam boilers and auxiliary equipment.
• Knowledge of boiler safety devices, firing methods, fuel systems, and pressure controls.
• Knowledge of water level requirements, draft regulation, and combustion efficiency principles.
• Knowledge of maintenance practices for boiler rooms, pump rooms, and mechanical equipment.
• Ability to safely operate boilers using automatic stokers, hand firing, and oil burners.
• Ability to inspect, maintain, clean, lubricate, and make minor repairs to boilers and related machinery.
• Ability to analyze boiler operation issues and apply effective corrective actions.
• Ability to take accurate instrument readings and maintain detailed operational logs and records.
• Ability to maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
• Ability to learn and use electronic and manual information and recordkeeping systems.
• Ability to follow safety protocols, respond to emergencies, and work under supervision as required.
