Summary:
Central Plant System Technician (Class 5637). Classified position. Salary Grade 9. Pay Range $23.94 – $33.52 per hour. Hiring Range $23.94 – $28.73 per hour.
The Central Plant System Technician I operates, adjusts, services, and performs minor repairs and maintenance of automated heating, ventilating, air‑conditioning (HVAC) and associated systems and equipment. Monitors and takes routine or emergency actions upon receipt of alarms or requests for service or when system instrumentation indicates problems. This is a Trainee position in accordance with Pima County Administrative Procedure 23‑18.
Essential Functions- Operate automated and computer‑controlled heating, ventilating, and air‑conditioning (HVAC) control systems for County buildings or facilities, including adjusting temperatures of individual work areas and performing seasonal changeovers of equipment, systems, and their operating schedules.
- Operate central plant heating, cooling, and related auxiliary equipment and systems.
- Install, program, maintain, and repair energy management control system (EMCS) controllers.
- Perform and document minor operator‑level maintenance and repairs of central plant equipment and related systems.
- Set energy management operating limits and temperature parameters for computerized HVAC control system.
- Note and record meter, gauge, and indicator readings and adjust equipment or system operations accordingly.
- Sample, test, record, and adjust water chemistry in plant equipment water systems.
- Monitor fire alarm systems and report fires or emergencies to the 911 dispatch system, and shut down HVAC and related equipment in affected areas and facilities.
- Respond to and resolve inquiries and complaints about heating, cooling, and ventilation in County buildings or facilities.
- Monitor and act upon problems relayed via the County complex maintenance intercommunications network, elevator telephones, equipment room overheat alarms, and similar systems.
- Maintain equipment, system, facility, and shift operations and maintenance logs.
- Four years of experience in the operation or maintenance of central plant heating, ventilating, and air‑conditioning (HVAC) equipment and associated systems; or
- Associate’s degree from an accredited college or technical school in air‑conditioning technology and two years of experience in HVAC central plant operations; or
- Two years’ experience with Pima County performing the work of a Central Plant Operator (relevant experience or education from an accredited college or university may be substituted).
- Minimum one (1) year experience in the operation or maintenance of central plant heating, ventilating, and air‑conditioning equipment and associated systems.
- Minimum one (1) year experience monitoring the function and operation of building automation systems.
- Experience with basic computer skills (Outlook, Excel, Word, Delta, and Alerton control systems).
- Experience maintaining comprehensive records of work performed, modifications to equipment or systems, and related logs.
- Valid driver license required at time of application and appointment.
- Subject to a 39‑month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review to determine suitability to operate county vehicles.
- Ability to obtain a jail pass is required.
- Pre‑employment background checks, including verification of work history, education, and criminal conviction history.
- Under the Trainee Program, trainees are paid 5% less than the entry‑level salary during the training period of up to 24months. Trainees are eligible for a non‑competitive transition into the regular classified position upon successful completion of the program.

- Physical/sensory abilities may include lifting, pushing or pulling objects weighing up to 50pounds; climbing, crawling, kneeling, reaching, squatting and stooping; grasping; hearing in noisy areas; speaking in person and on the phone; vision for operating motor vehicles and machinery.
