Overview

The Department of Transportation (Use the "Apply for this Job" box below). two openings in the Operations Warehouse for Transportation Maintenance Specialist I. The role involves receiving, issuing, and tracking supplies and materials, performing repairs and fabrication, operating a forklift and driving a pick‑up truck as needed, and maintaining a clean and orderly warehouse environment.

Responsibilities
  • Receive, count, and catalogue items purchased from vendors.
  • Issue and track inventory items using computerized inventory management programs.
  • Operate forklift to unload freight deliveries and perform freight loading/unloading and delivery receiving.
  • Weld and fabricate miscellaneous items needed by Maintenance Operations.
  • Assemble and repair various types of traffic control devices.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly warehouse environment.
  • Distribute items such as PPE, tools, traffic control devices, and materials to maintenance crews.
Essential Functions
  • Perform skilled analysis and repair of equipment, systems and vehicles.
  • Lead others in fabrication or modifications of equipment and facilities.
  • Inspect, service, and maintain assigned tools, equipment and vehicles.
  • Perform quality control analysis on equipment and perform remedial actions to assure optimum operations.
  • Inspect, approve, or certify work of others (if certified).
  • Maintain comprehensive records on supported vehicles, equipment and systems.
  • Prepare estimates, sketches, and drawings for work proposed or in‑progress.
  • Coordinate own or unit activities with other units, agencies or contractors.
  • Monitor contractor performance, including contractor‑supplied goods and services.
  • Store, handle, use, and dispose of hazardous materials as required.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Completion of an industry‑recognized apprenticeship program in welding fabrication or heavy equipment operation AND one year of journey‑level experience in welding fabrication or heavy equipment operation (up to six months of relevant education may substitute). OR
  • Five years of journey‑level experience in welding fabrication or heavy equipment operation (up to two and one half years of relevant education may substitute). OR
  • Two years of experience with Pima County as a Trades Maintenance Technician in the specific trade, craft, specialty or operational area of required expertise.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience completing submitted requests and distributing items to customers.
  • Experience using computers including Microsoft Office Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel).
  • Experience operating and working near forklifts.
  • Experience welding for fabricating projects and minor repairs.
  • Experience diagnosing and repairing small gas engines.
  • Experience shaping, cutting, and joining wood to create items requested by customers.
Licenses and Certifications
  • Valid driver license is required at the time of application and at the time of appointment.
  • 39‑month DOT Motor Vehicle Record review mandatory.
  • Some positions may require Arizona certification as an herbicide/pesticide applicator, backflow device inspector/repair person, or installer.
  • Some positions may require National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification.
  • Some positions may require a valid Arizona commercial driver license (CDL) with appropriate endorsement(s).
  • All duties involving driving, forklift or powered equipment require physical and safety training.
Physical/Sensory Requirements
  • Lift and carry up to seventy‑five pounds, and frequently lift, push or pull objects weighing up to fifty pounds.
  • Operate assigned vehicles and powered equipment safely.
  • Work in extremes of heat, humidity, dust, cold, and with noxious chemicals or odors.
  • Ascend and descend ladders and stairs; work on and below work platforms.
  • Use hearing in noisy areas and under radio or equipment alarms.
  • Use vision to operate motor vehicles, forklifts, and to distinguish colors and depth perception.
