Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
Laboratory Mechanic
Civil and Environmental Engineering Department, Grainger College of Engineering, University of Illinois Urbana–Champaign.
Duties and Responsibilities- Install, dismantle, maintain, and repair fixturing and flumes used in Civil and Environmental Engineering research.
- Operate machine tools: lathes, mills (manual or CNC), drill presses, welders (MIG, TIG, Stick), plasma cutters, cutting torch, band saws, sanders, woodworking tools (table saws, routers, radial arm saws, compound miter saws) and hand tools.
- Operate lift truck, forklift and similar equipment for delivery acceptance, equipment placement, and relocation.
- Work from blueprints, sketches, and drawings.
- Perform additional duties to further department mission.
High school diploma or equivalent.
Any combination totaling four (4) years (48 months) from the categories below:
- 30 semester hours = 1 year
- 60 semester hours (associate's degree) = 2 years
Valid U.S. driver’s license at time of hire.
Knowledge,Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of materials, machine design, repair, and maintenance.
- Computer skills with CAD and CAM software.
- Mathematics skills (algebra, trigonometry, geometry).
- Maintenance troubleshooting, repair and preventive maintenance.
- Installation and configuration of equipment, wiring and programs.
- Effective verbal and written communication.
- Reading and interpreting maintenance manuals, schematics, drawings.
- Respectful communication across cultural backgrounds.
This is a full‑time Civil Service Laboratory Mechanic position on a 12‑month service basis. Start date as soon as possible after the closing date. Salary equivalent to entry‑level classification: $76,206 ($39.08/hr). The position is not eligible for work‑authorization sponsorship.
