a position has been declared open in weber school district for a head custodian. This position is for 8.00 hours per day, 257 days (12 months) per year, is compensated according to lane6 of the custodial salary schedule, and is eligible for benefits.

position summary

the head custodian is responsible for maintaining a safe, sanitary, and highly functional physical environment for students, staff, and the community. This role directs and coordinates the daily activities of the junior high custodial staff, oversees inventory and equipment, manages facility security (including opening/closing procedures), and ensures the building is prepared for daily educational operations and special events.

essential duties and responsibilities

leadership & supervision

  • direct, train, and schedule junior high custodial staff (full-time and part-time/sweepers) to ensure consistent, high-quality facility care.
  • conduct regular inspections of the building and grounds to ensure cleanliness, safety, and compliance with health regulations.
  • assist in evaluating the performance of building custodial staff and reporting performance metrics to building administration.

facility maintenance & operations

  • perform routine and deep-cleaning tasks across classrooms, restrooms, gymnasiums, cafeterias, and common areas.
  • execute basic preventative maintenance on building systems (hvac filter changes, boiler checks, basic plumbing, and minor electrical repairs like bulb/ballast replacement).
  • coordinate and execute seasonal deep cleaning projects, including floor stripping, waxing, and carpet extraction during summer and winter breaks.
  • manage the inventory of cleaning supplies, paper products, and maintenance equipment; submit purchase requests within the allocated building budget.

safety, security & event coordination

  • manage building security, including unlocking the facility for the start of the school day, securing all doors and windows at night, and managing the building alarm system.
  • maintain exterior grounds for safety, including immediate snow and ice removal from walkways and entryways prior to the start of the school day.
  • coordinate the setup and teardown of seating, tables, and equipment for school assemblies, sporting events, community meetings, and emergency drills.
  • respond to immediate facility emergencies (e.g., spills, bodily fluids, broken glass, plumbing leaks) swiftly and in accordance with district safety protocols.
other essential responsibilities
  • arranges and supervises the arrangement of furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for assemblies, lunchroom, meetings, classroom activities, and special events. Chairs risk management committee and serves on other school committees as may be required for the purpose of conveying information and/or receiving information. Cleans and supervises the cleaning of the school facilities (e.g. Classrooms, offices, restrooms, multipurpose rooms, grounds, snow removal, etc.)

    for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
  • coordinates scheduled special events, meetings, community functions, etc. (e.g. Records hours facility used, custodial hours required, equipment used, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring availability of facilities and/or equipment and providing information required for billing.
  • delivers various items (e.g. Supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of distributing materials to the appropriate parties.
  • directs assistant head custodian, part-time custodial personnel and substitute staff for the purpose of maximizing the efficiency of the work force, assisting in performance evaluations, and meeting shift requirements.
