Valdez City Schools is currently seeking applicants for the position of a full‑time, year‑round Night Custodian at Hermon Hutchens Elementary School. This position is open until filled.

SUMMARY

Under direct supervision of the Building Principal and Facilities Director, this position provides custodial support for the assigned building in order to give students a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient learning environment. In addition to keeping the building neat and clean, the custodian performs a variety of indoor and outdoor tasks to ensure efficient building operation.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Keep the assigned building, premises, sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times. Inspect playground equipment for safety and needed repairs.
  • Perform yard‑keeping chores such as grass cutting, trimming, and fertilizing; help maintain mowers and other lawn equipment.
  • Keep the campus free from rubbish and empty outside trash containers as needed in compliance with local, state, and federal laws and procedures for trash, rubbish, and waste disposal.
  • Shovel, plow, chip ice, and sand walks, driveways, parking areas, and steps as appropriate.
  • Wash all windows on the outside of the assigned building when necessary.
  • Raise the U.S. and Alaska flags at or before 8 a.m. on each school day.
  • Check daily to ensure all exit doors are open and all panic hardware works properly during hours of occupancy.
  • Assume responsibility for opening the building each school day and for ensuring all doors and windows are secured and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off before leaving.
  • Perform the daily set‑up and clean‑up of the cafeteria.
  • Keep all floors clean and attractive and in good condition.
  • Perform assigned work orders for maintenance and custodial tasks, and assist maintenance personnel.
  • Report needed major repairs or damage promptly to the Building Principal and Facilities Director.
  • Move furniture and equipment within buildings as required for activities and as directed by the principal.
  • Deliver interoffice mail and building freight.
  • Replenish towel, tissue, and soap dispensers as needed.
  • Check interior lights and change light bulbs.
  • Perform incidental record‑keeping and clerical tasks as assigned.
  • COMPETENCIES
    • Ability to use computer technology.
    • Ability to use custodial equipment.
    • Aptitude or competence for assigned responsibilities.
    • Ability to relate positively and cooperatively with students, other District employees, and school patrons.
    • Knowledge of safety hazards and proper use of various cleaning and sanitizing solutions.
    • Effective written and verbal communication skills.
    SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

    This position may assist in the supervision of student interns.

    WORK ENVIRONMENT

    The job operates indoors and outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and routinely uses a variety of cleaning equipment.

    PHYSICAL DEMANDS

    Consistently lift 70 pounds with assistance; lift, carry, push, pull, stoop, crouch, reach overhead, handle, speak, hear conversations, and maintain visual acuity, depth perception, and field of vision.

    POSITION TYPE AND EXPECTED HOURS OF WORK

    This is a full‑time position with benefits. Days and hours are Monday through Friday, 8 hours/day. The position operates for 260 days out of the year. Salary grade:

    TRAVEL

    Some travel may be expected.

    REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft programs.
  • PREFERRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
    • Two years of successful experience as a custodian.
    ADDITIONAL ELIGIBILITY QUALIFICATIONS

    The successful candidate must present/pass a valid criminal background check upon hire.
