Job Summary:The Shop Foreman provides leadership and oversight of the Transportation Department’s maintenance operations. This role supervises mechanics, coordinates repairs and preventive maintenance schedules, ensures compliance with state and federal safety regulations, and maintains the district’s fleet of school buses and support vehicles in safe, reliable condition.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:- Supervise and assign daily work to mechanics and shop staff.
- Oversee and participate in diagnostics, repairs, and preventive maintenance on buses and other district vehicles.
- Ensure compliance with Georgia Department of Education, Georgia Department of Public Safety, and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations.
- Maintain accurate records of inspections, repairs, parts inventory, and work orders.
- Coordinate with the Director/Assistant Director of Transportation on bus availability and readiness for routes, field trips, and emergencies.
- Assist with budget planning, including parts, tools, and equipment needs.
- Provide technical guidance and training to mechanics and staff on proper repair methods and safety practices.
- Schedule and oversee contracted repairs and warranty work with outside vendors.
- Ensure shop safety, cleanliness, and adherence to OSHA and district safety protocols.
- Support roadside assistance calls when needed to minimize delays in student transportation.
- Communicate effectively with drivers, administrators, and leadership regarding vehicle issues and timelines.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; technical training in diesel/heavy vehicle repair preferred.
- Preferred 5 years’ experience in vehicle maintenance, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or lead mechanic role.
- Valid Georgia CDL with Passenger (P) and School Bus (S) endorsements (or willingness to obtain within probationary period).
- Strong knowledge of diesel engines, electrical systems, hydraulic systems, and modern diagnostic tools.
- Ability to manage staff, schedules, and workflow effectively.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- Shop and outdoor environment with exposure to noise, fumes, chemicals, and all weather conditions.
- Must be able to lift up to 70 pounds, bend, climb, and work in confined spaces.
- On-call availability for emergencies, including evenings and weekends if required.
Terms:
- Full-time, 12-month position.
- Salary commensurate with experience, in accordance with Valdosta City Schools' salary schedule.
