Overview
The Greater Vallejo Recreation District invites applications for the position of Maintenance Worker 1 in the Maintenance Parks department. This is an entry-level, semi-skilled maintenance role responsible for general maintenance tasks, some electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and custodial duties in District facilities.
General SummaryThis position is responsible for completing semi-skilled maintenance tasks and performing custodial duties. It is the entry-level class in the Parks Maintenance Worker series.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities- Assist in the maintenance of park facilities and buildings as directed.
- Maintain landscaping in District parks, grounds, and buildings using hand and power tools. Prune shrubs and trees; mow and edge lawns and fields as directed.
- Perform minor repairs on irrigation systems. Dig holes to expose irrigation pipes and repair as needed.
- Clean park grounds, buildings, and facilities. Clean restrooms, offices and trash receptacles; haul trash and debris as directed.
- Inspect walls, sidewalks and play equipment for graffiti and remove as directed.
- Inspect play equipment for unsafe structures and hazards; repair as necessary or refer to supervisor.
- Prepare baseball and softball fields prior to games (watering, dragging infields, chalking lines, setting bases, cleaning dugouts and bleachers, empting trash).
- Perform turf maintenance (mowing, fertilizing, aerating, topdressing, seeding) as directed.
- Assist in ensuring vehicles are properly maintained; wash and detail vehicles.
- Learn to operate construction and maintenance equipment and power tools (e.g., backhoe, grader, jackhammer); operate mowers, edgers and pruners; maintain hand and power tools; perform preventive maintenance on equipment.
- Adhere to established safety regulations and precautions related to all work performed.
- Apply pesticides, herbicides, and fertilizers in park areas.
- Perform related work as required.
- Receives general supervision and direction from higher-level Parks maintenance staff.
- Job has no responsibility for directing or supervising others.

Minimum Qualifications RequiredEducation and Experience
- High School diploma or G.E.D. equivalency
- One (1) to three (3) years of experience in general construction and maintenance
- Any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience that provides the required skills, knowledge and abilities
- Possession of a Class C California driver's license.
- English grammar, spelling, and punctuation
- Principles and practices of basic bookkeeping
- Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment
- Basic methods and techniques of general construction, grounds maintenance and custodial work
- Basic operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools used in the area of work assigned
- Interpersonal skills to develop and maintain effective working relationships
- Ability to perform a variety of duties, often changing between tasks
- Basic mathematical functions (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, percentages, ratios)
- Meet schedules and deadlines
- Understand and carry out oral and written directions
- Organize and maintain paper documents and electronic files
- Maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries
- Learn maintenance, construction, custodial and repair work in assigned areas
