The Greater Vallejo Recreation District is a Special Service District that manages 407 acres of public park space, including 20 neighborhood parks, 10 community parks, 6 special purpose parks, an Olympic‑size swimming pool, and 4 community centers. GVRD maintains over 1,000 acres of public land.

Job Description

Under general supervision assist the full‑time maintenance crew in all aspects of grounds and facility maintenance in the assigned area. Perform a variety of minor repairs such as irrigation systems, buildings and ball fields, routine maintenance on equipment, and various technical tasks as directed.

Receive immediate supervision from higher level maintenance staff.

Essential Functions
  • Assist full‑time maintenance crew in all aspects of park, facilities and building maintenance as directed.
  • Maintain landscaping using a variety of hand and power tools; prune shrubs and trees; mow and edge lawns and fields as directed.
  • Perform minor repairs on irrigation systems, dig holes to expose irrigation pipe, and repair as needed.
  • Clean park grounds, buildings and facilities; clean restrooms, offices and empty trash receptacles; haul trash and debris as directed.
  • Inspect walls, sidewalks and play equipment for graffiti and remove as directed.
  • Inspect play equipment for unsafe structures and hazards; repair as necessary or refer to supervisor.
  • Prepare baseball and softball fields in advance of games, including watering, dragging infields, chalking lines, setting out bases, cleaning dugouts and bleachers, and emptying trash.
  • Perform turf maintenance functions on turf areas including mowing, fertilizing, aerating, topdressing, and overseeing as directed.
  • Maintain work trucks – wash and detail trucks.
  • Work days or evenings, weekend and holiday hours as assigned.

  • Provide support as needed for various recreation programs.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Qualifications

    Knowledge of basic methods and techniques of general construction, grounds maintenance, and custodial work; basic operational characteristics of mechanical equipment and tools.

    Ability to learn a variety of maintenance, construction, custodial and repair work; learn fertilizer composition, plant identification and maintenance; learn mowing techniques and operate mechanical equipment; perform heavy manual labor; understand and follow oral and written instructions; establish and maintain effective working relationships; maintain mental capacity for effective communication.

    Experience and Education

    Some general maintenance experience performing similar work in parks or landscaped areas is desirable. High school diploma or equivalent is required.

    Possession of a valid California driver’s license with an acceptable driving record is required.

    Working Conditions

    Field environment with travel between sites; exposure to hazardous chemicals, heat, cold, inclement weather, slippery or uneven surfaces and heavy construction equipment. Physical demands include heavy lifting, bending, stooping, kneeling, crawling, working at heights, standing for prolonged periods, and operating motorized vehicles and equipment.
