Job Description8.0 hours per day, 12 months per year (Fair Labor Standard Act Status: Non‑exempt)
Starting Date: Immediately
This position is for a custodial assistant or swing shift custodian with a high school diploma or equivalent. Responsibilities include scheduling custodial staff, operating HVAC systems, inspecting buildings, performing maintenance, and ensuring cleanliness and safety.
Qualifications- High school diploma or equivalent
- Two years experience as a custodial assistant or swing shift custodian with strong knowledge of cleaning techniques, materials, and equipment
- Good mechanical aptitude and ability to maintain HVAC and other systems
- Demonstrated leadership ability
- Current WISHA approved first aid certification
- Current ISSAS (International Sanitary Supply Association Standards) district training and certification
- Ability to work effectively as a team leader and team member
- Ability to plan, direct, and evaluate the work of custodial employees
- Ability to obtain Building Operator Certification (BOC) within one year of promotion
- Ability to work with frequent interruptions and meet tight time constraints and deadlines
- Regular attendance to carry out the duties and responsibilities of the position to achieve program requirements, goals, and outcomes
- Ability to clean to meet acceptable health and other environmental standards
- Ability to attain and maintain certifications/licenses necessary to perform work using ladders, scaffolding, mechanical lifts and district vehicles
- Ability to spend most of the work‑day standing, lifting, and walking
- Ability to lift up to one‑third of your body weight up to 60 pounds
- Ability to climb ladders to change light bulbs and perform other tasks
- Ability to communicate with a variety of people in person, electronically, in writing, and over the phone and/or radio
- Ability to see well enough to inspect cleanliness of work areas
- Schedule swing‑shift custodial assistants and instruct them in their duties, including building security; inspect their work, suggest corrective action, and participate in performance evaluations.
- Operate the HVAC system of the assigned school, change belts, lubricate, and make adjustments as needed; write work orders for maintenance as necessary.
- Inspect building, grounds, and equipment for safety and repairs; make temporary minor repairs, write work orders for further repair, and repair minor furniture and equipment.
- Advise building principal on matters relating to mechanical equipment and/or building maintenance.
- Inventory and order cleaning supplies to keep supplies always available.
- Perform cleaning tasks according to division of work.
- Deliver heavy items by hand truck for teachers and other staff.
- Take preventative measures to protect building and equipment from freezing weather; clean snow and ice from walks and roof when necessary.
- Assist in the performance and discipline process as directed by the Maintenance Supervisor or Director of Facility Maintenance and Operations and the Executive Director of Human Resources.
- Provide direction, feedback, and guidance to enable crews to perform their job requirements as directed by both building administrators and the Director of Facility Maintenance and Operations.
- Treat co‑workers, supervisor, students, parents, and others with dignity and respect at all times.
- Serve as a positive role model for students and practice the behaviors expected of students.
- Work in a flexible and cooperative manner.
- Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor.
New employees will start at the minimum hourly rate in the salary range of $30.84 to $34.74 per hour. Employees with prior years of service in a similar occupational status from other Washington School Districts or Education School Districts may receive experience credit towards salary placement.

RetirementEmployees may be eligible for retirement benefits through the Washington State Department of Retirement Systems (DRS). Eligibility is based on full‑time equivalent (FTE).
