Overview

Clean and perform routine housekeeping and maintenance of campus buildings, including residence halls, classrooms, and administrative offices. Serve as a team leader for a small crew of custodial/housekeeping staff, and/or coordinate/carry out a specialized custodial/maintenance function. Function as a Lead in the absence of the supervisor. Responsible for overseeing the department’s role in the conference/event activities.

6)

Responsibilities
  • Clean and maintain assigned college buildings (residence halls, offices, classrooms, meeting rooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, etc.). Tasks include cleaning floors and stairwells (vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, washing, stripping, waxing, buffing); cleaning windows, walls, chalkboards, trash cans, furniture, appliances; dusting furniture, fixtures, woodwork, blinds, drapes; cleaning and stocking bathrooms, including changing/cleaning shower curtains; watering plants; hanging pictures; and other general upkeep work.
  • Perform routine maintenance on plumbing, electrical, heating and ventilating systems (e.g., cleaning and minor repair of vents and drains, plunging toilets, replacing light bulbs).
  • Empty trash/recycle receptacles, move/recycle materials, stock supplies, pick up litter, and remove snow and apply salt at building entrances.
  • Move furniture and large items (tables, chairs, desks, beds, mattresses, dressers, stoves, refrigerators) and arrange items in various spaces as needed.
  • Serve as a team leader for a small custodial/housekeeping crew. In the absence of the Custodial/Housekeeper Supervisor, serve as Lead. Train new employees; assign daily work; monitor progress; assist staff with problems; handle minor personnel issues; report significant concerns to the Supervisor.
  • Coordinate and perform specialized custodial/maintenance functions (e.g., refinishing floors, shampooing carpets, minor painting, minor equipment repair/maintenance). Perform pool-related maintenance (vacuuming, cleaning, chemical regulation, backwashing). Maintain athletic areas and locker rooms; assist with gym/sport equipment setup and takedown.
  • Contribute to a clean and safe work environment by following appropriate cleaning/safety procedures, using proper equipment and supplies. Conduct quality control inspections and preventive maintenance; report facility problems and deficiencies.
  • Conference/Event duties involve extensive coordination with the Conference Coordinator, including audiovisual setup/troubleshooting as needed. Ensure activity plans are followed, oversee custodial/housekeeping staff as required, and ensure cleaning and setup are completed per schedule. Keep supervisor informed of issues and request assistance as needed.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Supervision

Supervision Received:
Direct supervision from the Custodial/Housekeeping Supervisor. Supervision Exercised:
Partial functional and administrative supervision of Custodian/Housekeepers.

Minimum Qualifications

High school education desirable. One to two years of relevant commercial/institutional custodial experience.

  • Physical ability to perform heavy custodial work and lift 50 pounds.
  • Good basic supervisory skills.

Compensation

The budgeted compensation for this position is $17.00 per hour.
