Job DescriptionJob Purpose
The Custodian is responsible for ensuring building(s) are kept in good order in a way that will provide a safe learning environment for students. The custodian cleans and performs routine housekeeping and maintenance of school building(s).
Essential Job Functions
- Cleans floors: vacuum, sweep, dust mop, wash, strip, wax, and buff.
- Washes and cleans windows, walls, chalkboards, trash cans, water fountains, and sinks.
- Dusts furniture, fixtures, wood work.
- Installs and maintains bulletin boards and displays, and repairs boards, artwork, frames, and displays.
- Provides setup and breakdown of cafeteria, gymnasium, auditorium, or other spaces for special events.
- Empties trash and recycling receptacles and picks up litter in and around buildings.
- Unloads materials from delivery trucks.
- Provides routine grass trimming and leaf raking near building entrances.
- Cleans and stocks bathrooms.
- Repairs or replaces ceiling tiles.
- Cleans windows; cleans and repairs window coverings.
- Repairs plumbing fixtures.
- Replaces light bulbs.
- Moves furniture.
- Takes all necessary and reasonable precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities, reporting known safety hazards to supervisor.
- Available to support students and staff during evacuation drills and emergencies.
Compensation
This position pays between $18.72 and $28.22 per hour, depending on experience and qualifications. Compensation is determined by the district’s collective bargaining agreement, which considers factors such as degree level and years of service.

Custodian
Required Level of Education & Experience
- High school degree, or equivalent, preferred.
- One to two years of relevant experience preferred.
- Or a combination of education and experience from which comparable knowledge and skills are acquired.
Desired Qualifications
- Ability to read a limited number of two- and three-syllable words and to recognize similarities and differences between words and between series of numbers.
- Ability to print and speak simple sentences.
- Good basic mathematical skills including ability to perform operations using units of weight measurement, volume and distance.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
- Ability to communicate courteously, efficiently and effectively with a variety of individuals, including students, faculty and staff, administrators, parents, and other school visitors.
- Ability to work cooperatively, collaboratively and effectively with peers, supervisors, and school administrators.
- Ability to effectively resolve conflicts.
- Knowledge and skills related to routine housekeeping and maintenance work required.
- Reliable transportation to work.
- Commercial cleaning experience preferred.
- Experience waxing and stripping floors, and using a scrubber, floor buffer, commercial vacuum and other floor machines also preferred.
Tools/Technology Requirements
- Good basic knowledge and skills related to operation of various types of maintenance, and cleaning equipment (ex. Vacuum cleaner, floor scrubbers, floor buffer, drills, etc.).
