Position SummaryThe Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for performing mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and general maintenance repairs on building systems and dairy processing equipment. This role plays a critical part in maintaining safe, reliable, and efficient plant operations.
The Maintenance Mechanic will respond to equipment and facility issues with a strong sense of urgency while maintaining accuracy, quality, and attention to detail. The successful candidate will work independently and collaboratively with the Maintenance team, Production, and outside contractors to minimize equipment downtime and prevent disruptions to plant operations.
Essential Responsibilities- Perform preventative, predictive, and routine maintenance on production equipment, facility systems, and building infrastructure.
- Complete assigned work orders in a timely, high-quality manner with pride and attention to detail.
- Regularly inspect operating equipment during the shift to identify potential problems and address issues before equipment failure occurs.
- Troubleshoot and repair mechanical, electrical, plumbing, and process-related equipment and systems.
- Respond promptly to equipment breakdowns and maintenance emergencies to minimize production downtime.
- Communicate equipment concerns, maintenance needs, and potential safety issues promptly and effectively to the Maintenance Supervisor.
- Maintain professional and respectful working relationships with coworkers, Production personnel, vendors, and outside contractors.
- Participate in required training and successfully complete assigned training throughout the year.
- Develop and maintain working knowledge of boiler startup, shutdown, operation, troubleshooting, and repair.
- Use computerized maintenance systems to receive and complete work orders, document repairs, track parts and materials, and assist with inventory management.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area.
- Follow all company safety, food safety, GMP, environmental, and quality requirements.
- Complete required HAZWOPER and HAZMAT training and consistently apply this knowledge while performing job responsibilities, including:
- Proper selection and use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
- Decontamination procedures
- Confined-space entry requirements
- Medical surveillance requirements
- Emergency response procedures
- Lockout/Tagout (LOTO)
- Elevated-work safety
- Proper handling and disposal of hazardous materials and waste during emergency situations
- Perform other maintenance-related duties as assigned.
Required:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Strong mechanical aptitude and demonstrated mechanical skills.
- Ability to troubleshoot problems and identify effective solutions.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Strong communication and teamwork skills.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, overtime, and unplanned/emergency call-in support.
- Must provide and maintain the personal hand tools necessary to perform the essential functions of the position.
Preferred:
- Previous maintenance experience in a manufacturing, food processing, dairy, or production environment.
- Electrical troubleshooting and repair experience.
- Welding and fabrication experience.
- Experience working with industrial processing or packaging equipment.
- Experience with computerized maintenance management systems (CMMS).
- Experience with boilers, pumps, motors, conveyors, compressors, and other industrial equipment.
This position is classified as Heavy Physical Demand and requires the ability to:
- Lift and carry up to 80 pounds.
- Stand and walk for extended periods, including shifts of 10+ hours.
- Frequently stoop, kneel, crouch, climb, reach, and work in awkward positions.
- Work in confined or elevated areas when required.
- Safely use hand and power tools and other maintenance equipment.
- Work in environments that may include airborne dust, high humidity, wet conditions, and hot or cold temperature extremes.
- Wear required PPE and follow all applicable safety procedures.
The Maintenance Mechanic works in an active dairy manufacturing environment and may be exposed to operating production equipment, elevated noise levels, wet or slippery surfaces, temperature extremes, chemicals, and other industrial conditions. Safety, food safety, and sanitation are essential parts of the job.
