JOB SUMMARY:
The Head Custodian is responsible for the overall maintenance, cleanliness, appearance, and safe operation of Otter Valley UMHS. This leadership role is ideal for someone who takes exceptional pride in their work and is committed to making Otter Valley UMHS the flagship school of the district—setting the standard for excellence in facility and grounds care. The successful candidate will foster a culture of ownership, professionalism, and attention to detail, ensuring that every area of the campus reflects pride, respect, and high standards.
The Head Custodian is responsible for maintaining the school's facilities and grounds in a condition of operating excellence, cleanliness, safety, and efficiency, creating an environment that students, staff, and the community are proud to experience. The Head Custodian also provides leadership and supervision to the custodial team, including seasonal custodial employees, ensuring that work is completed effectively and consistently. Safety, cleanliness, preventative maintenance, and the continued efficient operation of the facility will remain top priorities at all times, with a focus on continuous improvement and presenting Otter Valley UMHS as a model campus.
FUNCTIONS
- Perform and oversee cleanliness, repair and maintenance of all equipment, buildings and grounds of the school.
- Recommend to the Principal and Facilities Manager the purchase and replacement of maintenance equipment and custodial supplies.
- Coordinate with the Facilities Manager on work orders to organize, prioritize, assign, schedule for completion and report when requested on work accomplishments
- Perform routine manual work involving custodial and housekeeping care of school buildings and grounds, including snow removal, recycling, cleanliness and groundskeeping
- Report all custodial problems to the Facilities Manager in a timely manner
- Ensure that all custodial equipment (buffers, vacuum cleaners, scrubbers, pails, mops, etc.) are kept clean and in excellent condition.
- Maintain custodial storage areas in a clean and orderly fashion
- Oversee management of onsite hazardous materials
- Collaborate with Facilities Manager to maintain a proper inventory of all custodial supplies. These include but are not limited to: light bulbs, toilet paper, paper towels, rags, cleaning solutions, waxes, buffer discs etc.
- Be available for after-hours response as needed
- Help with assigning work schedules for school custodial staff.
- Coordinate with the Facilities Manager the work of custodial staff.
- Make weekly inspections of all buildings and grounds.
- Schedule, supervise and evaluate custodial personnel
- Assist in the recruitment, employment, assignment, transfer, promotion, demotion, or dismissal of custodial and maintenance personnel.
- Maintain necessary records regarding work orders, supplies, time and attendance records etc.
- Coordinate with the Facilities Manager all building custodial vacation schedules.
- Responsible for securing the building or creating a schedule/system for securing the building.
- Understand and implement safety procedures as required by the school.
- Per Special Event request, ensure setup and break down for meetings, dances, activities and athletic events, etc.
- Other duties may be assigned by Facilities Manager or Principal as needed
A minimum of a High School Diploma, GED or equivalent preferred, with demonstrable leadership skills and experience in a supervisory capacity. Must be willing to work irregular hours and be able to respond to emergencies
TOOLS/TECHNOLOGY REQUIREMENTSNavigate and understand the school’s e-mail system to send and receive information and/or work requests and work with Google Drive applications, Safe schools, Frontline and school based digital systems.
Position Type: Full-time
Salary: $25 to $32 Per Hour
