Position: Deckhand.

Duties

  • Secure floating plant with manila and synthetic lines, cables, wire straps, rachets, etc.
  • Perform housekeeping and maintenance tasks such as washing down decks, chip-ping paint and rust from bulkheads, timber heads, cavels, deck equipment, and painting.
  • Greasing moving deck equipment such as capstans, tow winch, or electric cranes to ensure working condition.
  • Assisting other craftsmen with maintenance and repairs.

  • Successfully complete and pass pre-employment physical.
  • Successfully complete and pass pre-employment drug screen, and inclusion in the randomized drug testing program.

  • Work may require moderately heavy lifting and physical effort in moving drums in excess of 50 pounds.

Qualifications

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, Ameri Corps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element):
Ability to do the work of a(n) Deckhand without more than normal supervision. Conducting channel patrol activities, outboard motor operation, deck equipment repair, general maintenance and housekeeping on a floating plant.

- Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

  • Physical Efforts:
    Work requires substantial physical effort when handling heavy cables, equipment, and machinery; while making and breaking tows; and when washing, scrubbing, cleaning, chipping, and painting surfaces. Heavy lifting up to 40 pounds may be required. Work may involve long periods of standing, lifting, climbing, and crouching and walking.
  • Working Conditions:

    Works both inside and outside during a variety of weather conditions and climates, including extremes in heat and cold and heavy rainfall. Workers are exposed to paint fumes, and are subject to cuts and bruises while working with equipment. There is the possibility of eye injury while chipping paint and rust. There is a danger of slipping from floating plant into water with possibility of physical injury or drowning.

    On-shore work may involve working in mud, and dirty or cramped situations.
