Job Duties and

Preferred Qualifications:

Public Works Department is currently hiring for a Motor Equipment Operator I to perform a variety of duties and maintenance tasks associated with the Beach Operations group, including:

Operating various types of equipment such as a Four-Wheel Drive Beach Truck, Packer Truck, Mad Vacuum, Sweeper, and Skid Steer Operating various power tools

Trash collection

Clean up litter and debris on beaches, Boardwalk, and Atlantic Avenue Removal of dead sea life from beaches

Sand removal and grading

Trimming/weed eating and maintaining sand fences/split rails in public accesses

Set up and take down for Special Events Any other duties assigned as needed

Work location:

1401 Parks Avenue, Virginia Beach, VA 23451

Work Schedule:

5:30 am to 2:00 pm Monday-Friday during the off-season5:30 am to 2:00 pm (From April 1st to November 1st, the work schedule will be seven days a week)
Hours may vary to meet Resort and Special Event needs.

Must have a VA or NC Driver’s License Position is ALPHA I and may be required to work during all inclement weather (flooding, hurricanes & snow, etc.).

Minimum Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

Requires completion of tenth (10th) grade, plus one (1) year of experience in fields providing the required knowledge, skills and abilities, such as motor equipment operation; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities. Must have a current and valid driver’s license.

Special Requirements :
All employees may be expected to work hours in excess of their normally scheduled hours in response to short-term department needs and/or City-wide emergencies. May require a Commercial Drivers license. This position may require that incumbents wear and maintain appropriate personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, steel toed shoes, safety glasses, gloves, or other designated safety attire and equipment in designated areas of risk.

Specific requirements will be determined and communicated by the employee’s supervisor based on position assigned. This is a safety sensitive position and is subject to mandatory drug testing and annual exams. Positive drug test results may result in counseling and/or discipline, up to and including, termination.
