Position SummaryThe Director of Maintenance is a working supervisory position responsible for the hands‑on maintenance, repair, and upkeep of the 14 acre campus, including the Parish, School and Daycare buildings, grounds, equipment, and building systems, as well as the day‑to‑day leadership of maintenance, shared custodial, landscaping and contracted operations. The position performs maintenance work directly, including troubleshooting, repairs, preventive maintenance, response to work orders and facility needs, and participation in improvement projects across the whole campus which includes 13 structures.
The Director also schedules, assigns, prioritises, monitors, trains, and provides day‑to‑day direction to shared custodial staff and monitors contracted employees and service providers, while serving as a practical and technical resource to the Director of Operations.
This position supports the mission of Saint Gregory the Great Catholic Parish, School, and Daycare by helping provide safe, functional, clean and welcoming facilities across the whole campus for worship, education, childcare, ministry, community activities and daily operations.
The Director of Maintenance works very closely with the School Principal, Pastor and Director of Operations to coordinate campus priorities, communicate facility impacts, address safety and operational concerns, schedule work and minimise disruption to Parish, School, Daycare worship, educational, childcare and ministry activities. The Director also works regularly with shared custodial staff; assigned maintenance personnel;
School and Daycare employees; clergy; parish and ministry personnel; contracted employees and service provider; parishioners; students; families and visitors.
1. Maintenance & Repairs
- Performs general repairs throughout the Parish, School, Daycare and the whole campus involving plumbing, electrical components, carpentry, doors and hardware, fixtures, painting, furniture, equipment and other building components within the scope of training and experience.
- Responds to work orders, urgent maintenance issues, equipment failures, safety concerns and other facility needs.
- Performs preventive maintenance and routine servicing of building equipment and systems.
- Participates directly in facility improvements, installations, setups, equipment moves and other physical maintenance work.
- Determines when work can be completed in‑house and when a specialised contractor is needed.
- Supervises the day‑to‑day work of maintenance and shared custodial personnel.
- Develops employee schedules and coordinates coverage for regular operations, absences, special events, seasonal demands and emergencies.
- Assigns and prioritises work and ensures responsibilities are completed efficiently and on schedule.
- Monitors employee productivity and the quality of completed work through regular observation and inspection.
- Provides hands‑on direction, training, coaching and corrective guidance to staff.
- Addresses routine performance concerns and works with the Director of Facilities & Operations when further corrective action is necessary.
- Regularly inspects buildings, grounds, equipment and building systems to identify maintenance needs, deterioration, hazards and other concerns.
- Helps ensure campus standards for maintenance, cleanliness, safety, functionality and appearance are consistently maintained.
