Job Description

JOB TITLE: Painter (Part-time)

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Coordinator of Facilities Maintenance

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: Under general supervision, applies coats of paint, varnish, stain, enamel, or lacquer to decorate and protect interior and exterior surfaces, trimmings, and fixtures of buildings and structures throughout the division. Position will work part-time, up to 29 hours per week, as needed.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Applies paint, vinyl and wallpaper, including special papers and fabrics, to walls, furniture and structures.
  • Examines and maintains painted exterior and interior painted surfaces, trimming and fixtures.
  • Prepares surfaces and applies paints, stains, shading stains, and clear finishes.
  • Removes previous paint by means of scraping, sanding, and hydro-blasting.
  • Inspects and refurbishes wall surfaces by means of the appropriate materials.
  • Reads blueprints and drawings of the premise for the execution of painting job.
  • Orders paint supplies and materials.
  • Applies wood finishing by suitably preparing surface.
  • Covers interior walls and ceilings with wallpaper or fabrics.
  • Operates and maintains high pressure, low volume, spray machines.
  • Submits finished work orders to supervisor.
  • Provides assistance to other workers.
  • Operates and maintains various power and manual tools.
  • Follows established safety and protection procedures.
  • Cleans up job site after work, and returns equipment and tools.
  • Maintains a clean work environment.
  • May be required to report to work under emergency conditions, as necessary.
  • May supervise students and/or temporary staff.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High School Diploma or GED and five to seven years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of equipment, tools, and painting procedures.
  • Must have valid Virginia driver’s license.
  • Sufficient strength and physical dexterity to perform duties and responsibilities of the job, including heavy work with exposure to inclement weather conditions for prolonged periods of time.
  • Knowledge of supervisory principles and practices.
  • Skill in both verbal and written communication.
Physical Requirements

The work is medium work which requires exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to lift, carry, push, pull or otherwise move objects, including the human body. Work is performed while standing, sitting and/or walking. Requires the ability to communicate effectively using speech, vision, and hearing.

Requires the use of hands for simple grasping and fine manipulations. Requires bending, squatting, crawling, climbing, reaching. Additionally, the following physical abilities are required:

  • Reaching:
    Extending hand(s) and arm(s) in any direction.
  • Pushing or Pulling:
    Using upper extremities to press against something with steady force in order to thrust forward, downward or outward. Using upper extremities to exert force in order to draw, haul or tug objects in a sustained motion.
  • Grasping:
    Applying pressure to an object with the fingers and palm.
  • Handling:
    Picking, holding, or otherwise working, primarily with the whole hand.
  • Feeling:
    Perceiving attributes of objects, such as size, shape, temperature, or texture by touching with skin, particularly that of fingertips.
  • Manual Dexterity:
    Picking, pinching, typing, or otherwise working, primarily with fingers rather than with the whole hand as in handling.
  • Repetitive Motion:
    Substantial movements (motions) of the wrist, hands, and/or fingers.
