Position: MAINTENANCE WORKER - PUBLIC WORKS
JOB SUMMARY This position participates in the repair and maintenance of county streets, drainage structures, and related infrastructure.

MAJOR DUTIES Operates a side-arm and pull-behind tractor to cut grass on right-of-way.

Operates a pole saw to trim tree limbs.

Cuts weeds around signs and other structures.

Collects brush and other debris from right-of-way.

Assists in operating a vacuum truck to clean drainage structures.

Assists in the installation of drainage pipes.

Patches and repairs potholes.

Maintains sidewalks and bike paths.

Maintains public beach access structures.

Performs shoulder, curb, driveway ramp, and gutter maintenance.

Operates a variety of hand and power tools, including chain saw, weed eater, blower, shovel, rake, limb saw, etc.

Installs traffic control devices and assists in traffic control at work sites.

Responds to after-hours emergencies.

Performs pre-and post-trip vehicle and equipment inspections; performs preventive maintenance.

Attends department meetings and training sessions.

Directs the work of assigned community service workers in the collection of litter as assigned.

Installs, maintains, and repairs street signs as assigned; cleans, washes, and straightens signs; constructs new signs; installs battery back up systems for traffic intersections; stripes parking lots and crosswalks.

Performs related duties.

KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION Knowledge of right-of-way and drainage system maintenance principles.

Knowledge of work safety principles and practices.

Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in public works maintenance operations.

Skill in the operation of tractors and other assigned equipment.

Skill in the use of hand and power tools.

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS The Streets and Drainage Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results.

GUIDELINES Guidelines include county policies and procedures. These guidelines are generally clear and specific but may require some interpretation in application.

COMPLEXITY/SCOPE OF WORKThe work consists of related maintenance duties. Inclement weather and heavy traffic contribute to the complexity of the position.

The purpose of this position is to participate in the maintenance and repair of county roads, drainage structures, and other public works infrastructure. Successful performance contributes to safe and well-maintained infrastructure.

CONTACTSContacts are typically with coworkers, vendors, and the general public.

Contacts are typically to resolve problems and provide services.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS/ WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed while intermittently sitting, standing, stooping, walking, bending, orcrouching. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.

The work is performed outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee may be exposed to noise, dirt, grease, and machinery with moving parts. Work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, gloves, etc.

Ability to read, write and perform mathematical calculations at a level commonly associated with the completion of high school or equivalent.

Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.

Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver’s license issued by the State of Georgia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
