CUSTODIAN

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
:
Perform routine manual work with responsibility for efficient performance of custodial services in and around City buildings. Must have ability to work during the afternoons or days. Work involves routine custodial services, maintenance, repairs, upkeeps of grounds, public buildings, facilities and equipment; the safe and efficient operation of light to heavy-duty power-driven equipment.

Work is under the supervision of an employee of higher classification.

TYPICAL EXAMPLES OF WORK
:
An employee in this class may be called upon to do any or all of the following:

• Maintain floor surfaces by use of buffing machines, vacuum cleaners, wet and dry pick-ups, etc.
• Sweep, mop, scrub, wax and polish floors and corridors.
• Clean and maintain lavatories and drinking fountains.
• Wash windows, woodwork and empty wastebaskets.
• Clean and prepare walls for painting.
• Dust, polish arrange and move furniture and equipment.
• Replace light bulbs and clean and polish brass and other metalwork.
• May care for lawn and grounds around City buildings.
• May wash and gas City vehicles.
• Attend heating system as required.
• Decorate buildings as required.
• Check and replenish lavatory and other supplies.
• Render non-skilled assistance to skilled maintenance persons when required.
• Move records, furniture and other equipment as required.
• Gather and dispose of refuse.
• Sweep sidewalks and keep free of ice and snow.
• Inspect buildings to determine cleaning and maintenance requirements.
• Act as general laborer in planting and maintaining trees, shrubs, evergreens and flowers, laying sod, cultivating, fertilizing, sowing grass seed, maintaining areas, cutting down dead and diseased trees, pruning trees.
• Act as general laborer in raking, loading, hauling brush, dead limbs, stones and other material from areas of responsibility.
• Read blueprints of a relatively simple nature.
• Ability to be trained to operate and maintain equipment such as trucks, tractors, mowers, power saws, bulldozers, loader tractor and other light power-driven equipment used in recreation and park maintenance work.
• Climb trees to trim and top.
• Operate related light and medium equipment in maintenance work.
• Help in the cleaning and flushing of sewer and water lines.
• Operate automotive and other mechanical equipment required in the performance of the assigned tasks.
• May perform service work on equipment and make minor repairs and adjustments.
• May perform other assigned manual labor tasks.

• Reasonable working knowledge of a personal computer.
• Reasonable knowledge of cleaning methods, procedures, materials and equipment.
• Reasonable knowledge of cleaning and maintaining various floor compositions such as ceramic and terazzo floor tiles, concrete floors and carpeting.
• Reasonable knowledge of mechanical equipment and tools.
• Ability to perform routine operation involved in custodial duties without close supervision.
• Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and other employees.
• Ability to work afternoons and evenings.
• Ability to work a reasonable amount of overtime.
• Knowledge of and ability to perform a variety of tasks involved in general building maintenance activities, including mechanical, electrical, plumbing, carpentry and painting work.
• Ability to organize and carry out work assignments.
• Reasonable knowledge of the traffic laws, ordinances, and rules involved in the operation of medium and heavy vehicles.
• Good physical condition and stamina.
• Ability to perform heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time, often under adverse weather conditions.
• Ability to be trained to operate a street sweeper, front-end loader, claw and backhoe.
• Ability to be trained to operate related medium and heavy equipment in maintenance and repair work.
• Ability to perform service work on equipment, such as lubrication and related maintenance.
• Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with the public and other employees.
• Reasonable knowledge of cleaning methods, procedures, materials and equipment.
• Reasonable knowledge of the materials, tools, methods and procedures practiced in maintenance of parks, lawns, shrubs and trees.
• Reasonable knowledge of the related occupational hazards and safety precautions necessary for the protection of employees and the public.

Ability to understand, follow and transmit oral and written instructions.

Ability to operate such sewer maintenance tools as rods, cables and sewer machines, and have knowledge of the correct methods followed in flushing sewers and water lines.

• High school graduation or G.E.D. equivalent.
• Must present ORIGINAL diploma or sealed transcripts at time of application.
