PRIMARY FUNCTION

The Maintenance Assistant is responsible to provide efficient maintenance and repair service for equipment, hardware, property and furnishings in buildings or areas operated by the school district in accordance with accepted building trade practices. The Maintenance Assistant reports to the Director of Operations and/or designee.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Must possess a valid Michigan driver’s license(s), have and maintain a good driving record
  • Knowledge of procedures in repairing various building structural components (wall repair, doors and hardware, windows and glazing, repainting, etc.) desirable
  • Ability to measure and calculate various takeoffs, quantities and other job task requirements desirable
  • Ability to operate basic maintenance equipment (saws, drills, pneumatic tools, etc.) desirable
  • Ability to operate painting equipment, desirable
  • Ability to install chalkboards, panels, ceiling tile and related finishing materials, desirable
  • Ability to paint and apply other finishing materials to various surfaces, desirable
  • Ability to work without direct supervision
  • Ability to follow both written and verbal instructions
  • Ability to read and apply documents such as handbooks, Board Policies, contracts, safety rules, operating, and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals
  • Ability to work cooperatively with all staff and community members
  • Be physically able to perform the work with or without reasonable accommodations
  • Willingness to complete additional training and learn additional job-related skills as assigned
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Perform repairs to doors, frames and associated hardware; including panic devices, closers, hinges, locks, cores, keys, etc.
  • Replace glass and glazing materials and associated trim work, including windows and frames.
  • Perform painting and refinishing of various surfaces throughout the district in accordance with established standards.
  • Perform minor renovation activities, including floor replacement, walls, partitions, doors and frames, casework, whiteboards, bulletin boards, display cases, pictures and frames, wall plaques, etc.
  • Assemble furniture items, desks, shelving, cabinets, display cases and other school furnishings.
  • Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs to building structural components (roofing, interior and exterior walls, brick, cinder block, ceramic tile, stone, mortar, tuck pointing, etc.)
  • Perform all repair and maintenance activities using approved techniques.
  • Maintain tools and equipment in operational condition.
  • Operate painting equipment and other machinery used in the department.
  • Order materials or equipment when necessary.
  • Utilize district work order management system to generate and complete work orders, entering appropriate data (labor time, materials ordered/used, completion data, etc.) as necessary.
  • Assist the Leader(s) in maintaining an accurate inventory of all maintenance equipment and systems.
  • Assist the Leader(s) in preparing work estimates.
  • Adhere to all established work practices, safety standards, work rules, policies and other instructions, including OSHA, Right-to-Know, Blood borne Pathogens, etc.
  • Work with other members of the department to determine the best method of accomplishing assigned tasks.
  • Operate assigned vehicles in a safe and reasonable manner, taking care to secure all contents.
  • Perform preventative maintenance and minor repairs on district mechanical equipment such as cleaning coils, filter changes, lubrications, belts, general cleaning, etc. in accordance with established standards.
  • Perform minor electrical or plumbing repairs in accordance with established standards.
  • Provide oral and/or written reports regarding equipment, materials, work accomplished, work in progress and other areas as requested.
  • Perform snow/ice removal, including application of salt and other products to maintain safety.
  • Maintain awareness of and take appropriate corrective action or report discrepancies and items needing repair or other attention.
  • Maintain awareness of the importance of good public relations by assisting staff, students, and non school personnel.
  • Provide assistance to the maintenance department as directed.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned.
