Mission
Youth Build Public Charter School (Youth Build PCS) is an alternative high school for young people seeking to transform their lives by re-engaging in their education in a non-traditional school environment. Youth Build PCS prepares students for post secondary education and the workplace by offering, in English and Spanish, academic, vocational and workforce development programs. Youth Build PCS believes that service to the community is an essential part of the transformative process.
Therefore, students serve their community through volunteer projects and by creating housing for low-income residents in the Washington, DC metropolitan area.
The Dean of Students will lead the development and growth of an exemplary school culture at Youth Build PCS. Specifically, the Dean will:
School Culture- Develop and implement systems to dramatically improve Youth Build PCS' daily attendance rate, ensuring an exemplary daily attendance rate
- Create, manage and schedule special incentive programs that promote and maintain a positive school climate, high levels of attendance, and a culture of achievement
- Create and plan content, and communication weekly for community meeting
- Maintain a strong, positive school culture by providing support to staff and students and by holding staff and students accountable to their responsibilities to foster that culture
- Involve all Youth Build stakeholders in the development of a strong positive school culture through school climate walkthroughs and collaborative planning time with Youth Build Team members
- Maintain student discipline records, systems, and structures that support a safe learning environment for students and staff
- Support and maintain the practices and procedures to build a school culture that is safe, empowering, structured and achievement-oriented
- Collaborate with the Student Support Team to support students' social emotional learning effectively
- Facilitation of Restorative practices (Restorative circles, LD, ISS, etc)
- Support with ensuring that all students who enter the school are cleared through the metal detector and their bags and jackets have been searched
- Maintain account of every person in building, at all times
- Routine walkthrough of building
Successful candidates will possess the following qualifications:
- Minimum of three to five years of experience working with young adults in education or social work in an urban community
- Bilingual preferred (English and Spanish)
- Familiarity with youth development principles and young adult /alternative high schools
- Experience with restorative justice principles and practices
- Experience working with disconnected/opportunity youth ages 16-24 preferred
- Bachelor’s degree preferred
- Must have performance- and results-driven approach to school leadership and student outcomes
- Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, analytic, and communications skills
- Skilled at analyzing, interpreting and using data to collaborate, identify best practices and areas for improvement and drive results
- Ability to build teams and develop collegial rapport with diverse peers, staff, students, and external stakeholders
- Ability to set priorities, organize workload, handle multiple responsibilities and meet deadlines
- Unwavering belief that every student can learn and the drive to help every student reach his or her potential
- Positive attitude, enthusiasm, self-confidence and flexibility
Reports to:
Director of School Culture and Student Success
Reporting requirements: 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. (Full-time, some of which may be evening and weekend service hours)
