Summary:
Reporting to the Director of Academic Programs, the Associate School Counselor effectively designs and implements counseling programs that optimize students' preparation for learning and personal/social development for all students.
Job Description:
- Provides counseling services as stated in students' IEPs; evaluates students' counseling needs and writes IEP goals; maintains and updates students' IEP progress reports; and participates in IEP meetings when counseling services are specified or requested.
- Engages students in learning to make decisions and to accept responsibility for such decisions; and assists students, both individually and in groups, to modify attitudes and behavior patterns and to develop skills necessary for healthy development.
- Assists students in learning to make reasonable adjustments to the demands and responsibilities associated with family, school and community membership; and works with teachers, staff, administrators, and others to establish and maintain the best possible environment for learning and personal growth.
- Maintains accurate confidential records and reports of counseling activities and data; and maintains appropriate counseling records on students.
- Responds to school crises and emergency situations, and responds to crisis situations to include altercations, illness, suspected child abuse and mandatory reporting.
- Prioritizes safety in the workplace as a collective responsibility for the well-being of employees and fosters a culture of safety that is integral to our success, including strict adherence to safety procedures and protocols, as well as promptly reporting any safety hazards or incidents.
- Provides preventive and intervention services; and responds to identified student needs through individual counseling, crisis intervention, classroom activities and the formation and facilitation of groups.
- Provides assessment of student's current behavioral and socio-emotional functions; recommends intervention strategies and referrals, as needed; and maintains information and contacts with other resource agencies and services.
- Provides and participates in orientation activities for students new to school and orientation to school; and participates in or coordinates liaison activities between the grades and the elementary and high school that assure a smoother transition.
- Develops, implements and leads workshops and in-service training on specific topics for staff and students; and provides information and training on counseling-related areas.
- Collaborates with administrators, teachers, and staff to establish and maintain the best possible environment for learning, personal/social growth and student success; and works closely with teachers and staff to support students with behavioral, social, or emotional needs.
- Provides socio-emotional programming, workshops and learning activities and opportunities for students (i.e., alcohol and drug awareness, healthy relationships, understanding and respect for others, and problem-solving skills).
- Demonstrates a genuine commitment to belonging in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.
