This position is for a reading and writing instructional specialist. As integral members of the CAS Dean’s team of academic leaders and educators, Specialists focus on enhancing Trinity’s first-year academic experience and meeting ambitious benchmarks for student learning, retention, and success.

Specialists appointments are full-time, 12-month, professional staff positions. Responsibilities of the position include offering active and engaged instruction and significant learning experiences tailored to the needs of historically underrepresented and underserved student populations at Trinity; designing and delivering supplemental instruction for students needing additional support; playing an active role in instructional faculty development; and assessing both student proficiency and student learning outcomes, using results to improve student placement and retention and continuously improve instruction.

The successful candidate must possess at least a master’s or doctoral degree from an accredited university in composition and rhetoric, curriculum and instruction in literacy studies, or other closely related field, which could include training in foundational education. Other requirements of the position include a minimum of two years’ experience teaching literacy and composition, with preference for candidates with experience teaching foundational reading and writing to at-risk student populations, especially in secondary education or community colleges.

Graduate training in curriculum development/curriculum and instruction is highly desirable.

Specific responsibilities of the position include:
  • Teaching four courses of foundationalcourses per semester in designated area for Trinity’s general education curriculum
  • Contributing to curriculum design through curriculum improvement processes, syllabus development, selection of textbooks and other course material, and supporting Moodle resources and any other applicable online learning or other supplemental instruction aids
  • Offering professional development workshops, consultations, and other programming to the Trinity community in designated area
  • Maintaining regular availability outside of class in offices hours, as well as any necessary supplemental instruction, tutoring, mentoring, and other forms of student-centered support
  • Providing leadership and mentoring support for adjunct instructors teaching first-year foundational courses in designated area
  • Compiling and analyzing course assessment data and presenting key findings in written reports to the Dean’s office and other relevant audiences
  • Collaborating with Decanal Team on first-year retention, summer learning experiences, and student-success initiatives and other strategic programming as appropriate

The successful candidate will have a track record of excellent teaching; documented examples of reading and writing curriculum development and assessment; and knowledge of current and successful foundational education teaching and learning strategies. Preference will be given to candidates who demonstrate excellence with engaged and active learning practices.
