Brief Description of Duties
The University of the District of Columbia is seeking a dynamic, patron-centered individual with collaboration skills and experiences to serve as the Assistant Professor, Early Childhood Education. The Assistant Professor, Early Childhood Education, is responsible for teaching a full range of courses in early care and education, child development, working with families, communication and problem solving, curriculum, anti-bias approaches, inclusion of children with special needs, and administrative/supervision.
The position also organizes the observation and practica component for students in the program. This is a full-time tenure track 9-month, position.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
The Assistant Professor for Early Childhood
Education:
- Teaches courses in early childhood education
- Counsel and advise student majors and keep orderly records for each student advisee
- Assists with recruitment of new students and retention of current students
- Organize and arrange field experience activities for students, making or recommending assignments when needed
- Answers student inquiries (emails and voice mail messages) in a timely manner
- Keeps abreast of current developments in the field of early childhood education
- Coordinates program activities with other instructors in the discipline
- Maintains and demonstrates competence in teaching, research and professional activities, including participation in professional associations (NAEYC) and community service
- Participates in college governance, department/discipline, division, college-wide, and campus meetings and committees
- Works with other program and/or discipline faculty to complete scheduled program reviews and to use the findings to revise the curriculum
- Prepare and provide students with course outlines that support learning outcomes set forth in the course syllabus. Develop and measure learning outcomes. Assess student performance and maintain grade records
- Develop assessments and activities for assigned courses that are appropriate for upload into the program's electronic assessment system
- Maintains a minimum of five office hours per week
- Assists in the acquisition of external funding for programs
- Help to develop and teach appropriate online courses. Some experience with instructional technology and Blackboard is highly desirable
- Teach during the day, evening, and/or weekend; may include more than one campus site (Mode of instruction may include in-person, hybrid, online - asynchronous and synchronous, HyFlex, and/or any combination thereof)
- Adhere to college and program policies and procedures
- Recommends selection of textbooks and other instructional materials
- Participate in the Self-Study of the program as part of the application for the NAEYC accreditation
- Performs other duties as assigned
- An earned Ph.D. (preferred) or Master's degree in early childhood education, child development, human development with specialization in child development/early childhood education.
- Must have at least two years of full-time teaching in a post-secondary institution, community college teaching is preferred.
- Additionally, knowledge of and experience in teaching caregivers to develop and implement developmentally appropriate programming for the care and education of infants and toddlers in group care settings are also preferred.
- Certification/training in the Program for Infant and Toddler Caregivers (PITC) a plus.
- Fluency in Spanish a plus.
