Youth and Family Summer Programming Intern

This internship offers the unique opportunity to become immersed in all of Smithsonian Associates' Summer children's programs, including:

Support the team by assisting with all aspects of the daily operations ofour summer youth and family programs. Duties include (though not limited to):

  • Create social media materials using such resources as Smithsonian Learning Lab.
  • Send necessary materials and documents to program registrants, and respond to their inquiries.
  • Ensure all crafting and print materials are ready for every program. Some crafting may be needed, though not always necessary.
  • Ensure all paperwork is complete and in order for each program.
  • Smithsonian Summer Camp:Working with campers (Kindergarten through 9th grade) and orchestration of the Youth Teacher Assistant (YTA) program for teens 15 years and older.
  • Smithsonian Summer Camp:Assist in overseeing Before and After Camp activities, as well as managing the camper lunch break.
  • Smithsonian Sleepovers:Provide in-person support for all Smithsonian Sleepovers. Spending the night is optional.
Learning Objectives

Interns will receive experience in the following areas:

  • Arts administration and museum education
  • Creation and execution of museum-based children's programs
  • Educational and cultural event production
  • Opportunity to create future programming ideas
  • Interaction with top-caliber camp instructors and museum educators
  • Experience or strong interest in working with children and/or program administration in a museum or classroom setting.
  • Background or strong interest in program management, education and/or special events planning required.
  • Ability to work quickly with attention to detail both independently and as a team
  • Self-motivated with ability to take initiative when needed.
  • Capability to collaborate as a member of a team.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel.
  • Strong computer and communication skills.
  • Must be able to interact with many different types of people while maintaining a professional demeanor.

Season:

Hours:

40+ hours/week; 1 full summer

Schedule:

May to start of Summer Camp
Monday - Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Start of Summer Camp to Late August
8-hour shifts starting as early as 7:30 a.m. and ending as late as 6pm.

This covers the time periods for Before and After camp.

Saturdays for Smithsonian Sleepovers
5:00 p.m. to Midnight

Youth Teacher Assistant (YTA) orientation sessions
Saturday, May 17, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Sunday, May 31, from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Compensation:

This internship receives a stipend of $7,700.00 for 11 weeks. Housing is not provided.

College credit may be granted and must be coordinated in advance with the intern'suniversity/college. Interns may also participate in Before/After Camp duties, andthus be eligible for additional weekly stipend. Information about the Before/After Camp duties will be provided to those selected for an interview.
