Requirements Job Overview The advising team of the College supports the Dean of the College in carrying out his responsibility for the general effectiveness of the instructional programs of the College, and in carrying out academic policies and regulations. The advising team of the College collectively advise 3700 undergraduates pursuing ~50 majors and ~50 minors in the bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degree programs.
The position serves on a team of professional staff whose time is primarily devoted to academic advising students in the College. The advising dean monitors students' progress toward degrees, arbitrates important academic issues, oversees and approves registration for courses, provides academic guidance, adjudicates and interprets academic regulations of the College, and supports academic orientation to the University.
The position is charged with maintaining the academic files and ensuring the integrity of the academic record for approximately 300 advisees. For those students, the advising dean will review/approve: transfer credit, study abroad programs, changes to a student’s academic program, and exceptions in the student’s degree audit. Consistent with Georgetown’s commitment to cura personalis, this position, though primarily an academic advisor, supports and advises students on any and all matters which interfere with personal well-being and academic success.
The advising dean will make frequent referrals to – and have regular contact with – campus partner offices, and must be well-versed in the services those offices provide.
All advising team staff participate in College Academic Council events, office retreats, New Student Orientation, Parents Weekend and Commencement activities in various roles.
Work Interactions This position reports directly to an Associate Dean, and interacts daily with other advisors and two records specialists on the team. At any given time, this position might interact with any of the 3700 students of the College, or any of the main campus faculty who teach them. This position has the authority to and is expected to handle and resolve many delicate and complex conflicts between student and faculty, student and parent, parent and the institution, with all appropriate tact, sensitivity, and a sense of the academic standards to be applied to each such conflict.
The position will also interact with colleagues in partner offices across campus.
Requirements and Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in an academic field appropriate to a college of arts and sciences.
3-5 years’ experience in higher education advising or administration.
Demonstrated interest in academic advising.
Appreciation for the value of a liberal arts education.
An understanding of Georgetown’s Jesuit and Catholic identity.
Excellent written and oral communication skills; good listening skills.
Ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously, meet time-sensitive deadlines, and set priorities.
Strong orientation to detail.
A penchant for problem-solving.
Ability to work well under pressure and function as a team player.
