Job Summary
This position is located in the D.C. Department of Corrections, Central Detention Facility (CDF). The DC Department of Corrections (DOC) provides public safety by ensuring secure, and humane confinement of pretrial detainees and sentenced misdemeanant prisoners.
The purpose of the position is to educate incarcerated men as part of an adult basic education program designed to prepare individuals to successfully take and pass the General Education Development (GED) Examination.
Duties And Responsibilities
Assist Education Program Administrator in preparation of lesson plans, curriculum development and the selection of texts, graphics and visual aids and related instructional materials. Collects and maintains GED program materials in math, science and language arts from a variety of outside resources, including GED organizations, major regional and national adult education centers and other correctional facilities.
Assists with interviews, evaluation and placement of new inmates entering the Department of Correction's GED program; and determines the best practices to utilize and collet educational background/additional subject materials and assesses their educational needs and assists with identifying the best possible path to GED success. Administers and grades examinations, including Test of Adult Basic Education (T ABE), Graduation Record Examinations (GRE) and related tests;

and prepares regular learning-station assessments and special reports at the direction of the program administrator.
Qualifications And Education
Bachelor's degree from an accredited or pre-accredited institution that included or was supplemented by supervised student teaching, and at least one course in each of the following areas: general psychology, human development, history and/or philosophy of education, and teaching methods at the learning level of the position to be filled, i.e., elementary or secondary learning level. For secondary school teaching positions, applicants must also have had at least 24 semester hours (or equivalent) of course work in each of the principal fields of instruction.
OR
Combination of education and experience - Applicants who have completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited or pre-accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's degree but who do not meet the specific course requirements shown above meet minimum qualification requirements if they have completed at least one full academic year of professional teaching experience at the elementary or secondary school level as appropriate to the position to be filled.

Professional teaching experience is defined as full and primary responsibility for the instruction of assigned students under general supervision in a recognized or accredited school or other accredited educational institution. This includes responsibility for preparation and presentation of lessons and the evaluation of students' progress throughout the learning period, including a determination of the students' success or failure according to established criteria.

Teacher certification or licensure in a State, the District of Columbia, the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, or a territory of the United States.

Experience:

Specialized experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position to be filled. To be creditable, applicants must have one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level in the line of progression.
Licenses and Certifications
Teacher Certification or Licensure.
Working Conditions/Environment
Work is performed in a correctional institution/jail setting learning-station, with and around inmates. Normal safety precautions are required.
