The Building Maintenance Engineer is responsible for ensuring the functionality, safety, and reliability of building infrastructure, including mechanical, electrical, and structural systems. This position performs a blend of hands-on technical work and coordination duties, with increasing responsibility in diagnostics, compliance, and system optimization. The role is designed for a candidate with a solid foundation in building maintenance who is ready to grow into a senior-level role.
Note:
This position is considered an onsite position and will need to commute to ACOG's office located in Washington, D.C.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

This position has no direct supervisory responsibilities but does serve as a coach and mentor for other positions in the department.
Duties/Responsibilities:

Preventive and Routine Maintenance
  • Conduct regular inspections and routine maintenance on HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and life safety systems.
  • Perform basic to moderately complex preventive maintenance tasks that help reduce system downtime and extend equipment life.
  • Maintain records of maintenance activities, inspections, and repairs.
Technical Repair and Troubleshooting
  • Diagnosing issues in mechanical and electrical systems, escalating advanced problems when needed.
  • Carry out repairs using appropriate tools, including replacement of components and parts.
  • Monitor and respond to emergency maintenance situations in a timely manner.
System Oversight and Optimization
  • Support the monitoring of building automation systems (BAS/BMS) to ensure efficient operation.
  • Assist with tracking energy usage and proposing simple efficiency improvements.
  • Assist with the development of a 5-year and 10-year capital plan.
Coordination and Communication
  • Provide concierge-style service to the tenants and staff to ensure the workplace is comfortable and safe place to work.
  • Liaise with contractors and vendors for maintenance work and ensure tasks are completed to standard.
  • Communicate with Facilities Leadership about system performance, major repairs, and improvement recommendations.
  • Assist in planning maintenance projects and documenting progress.
Compliance and Safety
  • Follow OSHA and company-specific safety protocols in all tasks.
  • Support audits and inspections by maintaining records and implementing corrective actions as assigned.
  • Maintain awareness of building code updates and safe work practices.
Growth and Development
  • Engage in training opportunities to expand technical expertise.
  • Shadow senior engineers on complex tasks and projects to build leadership readiness.
  • Take initiative on problem-solving and continuous improvement.
Required Skills/Abilities:
  • Strong troubleshooting and repair skills.
  • Effective communication and teamwork abilities.
  • Time management and organization.
  • Willingness to learn and take on increasing responsibility.
Education and Experience:
  • High School diploma or GED required; trade school or vocational certification preferred.
  • 3-5 years of experience in building maintenance or related trades (HVAC, plumbing, electrical).
  • Working knowledge of mechanical, electrical, and automation systems.
  • Familiarity with maintenance tracking software (CMMS) and basic use of building automation systems.
  • Ability to read and interpret technical manuals and schematics.
Salary Range

$75,000-$80,000 USD
