DSHS FTAA MOD – Boiler Operator (Stationary Engineer
2)

The Maintenance and Operations Division (MOD) at Rainier School Habilitation Center in Buckley, Washington is hiring an experienced Boiler Operator (Stationary Engineer
2) on an on‑call basis.

During the initial six months or longer, this position is expected to work full‑time in a temporary capacity to support onboarding and training needs. Following this period, the role will transition to on‑call status, with shifts scheduled as needed, including days, nights, weekends, and holidays.

Responsibilities
  • Ensure the safe and efficient operation of a high‑pressure steam plant with two steam‑generating boilers
  • Monitor, inspect, and repair gauges, valves, pumps, boilers, electronic controls, and safety equipment to maintain continuous operation of the steam‑boiler system
  • Operate and maintain auxiliary systems, including feed‑water and condensate pumps, deaerators, air compressors, fuel systems, and emergency generators
  • Troubleshoot and perform both minor and major repairs on boiler and HVAC systems
  • Interpret schematics, drawings, and operating manuals to support proper operation and equipment upgrades
  • Operate and adjust Cleaver‑Brooks Boiler Management (HAWK) systems as needed
  • Conduct equipment testing, water treatment, and blow‑down procedures to ensure safe and compliant operations
Desired skills, knowledge, and abilities
  • Ability to safely work from ladders or elevated platforms, including in high ambient temperature environments
  • Proficiency in using personal computers and Microsoft Office programs, including Outlook, Excel, Word, and Power Point
  • Strong interpersonal skills with the ability to interact respectfully and effectively with individuals who have limited sensory and physical abilities
  • Demonstrated commitment to treating all individuals with dignity, respect, and cultural sensitivity
  • Ability to collaborate professionally with coworkers from diverse backgrounds
  • Flexibility and responsiveness to address facility maintenance needs, including after‑hours and emergent situations
Qualifications
  • Three years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of stationary or marine high‑pressure boilers and heating systems
  • OR Completion of an advanced Stationary Engineer course from an accredited vocational/technical school or community college, and two years of experience in the operation, maintenance, and/or repair of stationary or marine high‑pressure boilers and heating systems
  • OR One year of State service as a Stationary Engineer 1
