Garage Supervisor

Responsible for supervising the operation of the garage which is engaged in maintenance and repair of a variety of automotive, heavy and specialized equipment. Responsible for assigning work to mechanics, ordering parts, quality control, maintaining necessary records, computerized reports of purchasing and maintenance activities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Maintains bulk fuel system, fuel pumps, and card reader system.
• Assigns work to mechanical staff; responds to employees bringing vehicles and equipment for preventive maintenance.
• Prepares records of employee time, fuel usage, inspection activities, and other records; codes and approves invoices; maintains computerized fuel and gas data reporting system.
• Locates, orders, and obtains parts and supplies.
• Investigates optional vendors for contract repairs; recommends strategies for major repairs.
• Trains and instructs workers in the appropriate safety procedures and policies for the job and enforces their use; participates in the City's safety program and adheres to safety procedures and policies of the department.
• Performs difficult repairs and replacements to motors, transmissions, and other automotive systems; provides technical expertise to less skilled employees.
• Diagnoses, adjusts, repairs and services a variety of cars, light and heavy construction equipment, trucks, and related equipment.
• Responds to automotive service calls for repair and assistance.
• Performs metal fabrication, welding, operates cutting torch, welder and plasma cutter.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Required Education and/or

Experience:

High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and technical or vocational automotive/heavy equipment maintenance training; or five or more years of experience in skilled automotive/heavy equipment repair work, including some supervisory experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Special Requirements:

• Valid N.C. commercial driver's license (CDL) with acceptable driving record.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Thorough knowledge of the techniques, principles, equipment and tools related to the repair and maintenance of automotive, construction and specialty equipment and related terminology.
• Thorough knowledge of the operating and repair characteristics of a variety of light and heavy-duty automotive equipment.
• Considerable knowledge of business mathematics.
• Considerable knowledge of occupational hazards and of related safety practices.
• Working knowledge of the availability and procurement of parts and supplies.
• Working knowledge of the organization's budgeting, purchasing, and personnel policies and procedures.
• Working knowledge of standard office procedures, practices and equipment.
• Ability to operate a computer terminal and related software.
• Ability to detect by inspection any broken or worn part and diagnose causes of defective operations.
• Ability to prepare accurate and complete work orders, requisitions, and other related documents.
• Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, vendors and the general public.

Physical Requirements:

Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; and/or up to 50 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of fingering, grasping, hearing, and repetitive motions Must possess the visual acuity to operate computer terminals, perform close inspection of moving and small parts, using measurement devices, assembly, and fabrication of parts, and to read, prepare, and use computer and manual records.

Working Conditions:

The employee is subject to hazards associated with mechanical repairs including working in both inside and outside environments, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noises, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, and oils.
