GENERAL
PURPOSE:
Under regular supervision and guidance, assists workers engaged in fabrication of and repair of neon signs to ensure the department meets expectations and deadlines.
- Assist neon department workers by cutting appropriate lengths of glass tubing, using a file to form letters, restocking, and using parts and materials for neon sign creation and repair.
- Heat and bend glass tubes to form scrolls of electronic neon signs according to patterns or customer specifications.
- Demonstrate proper glass‑bending technique by holding the tube over a gas burner at the point to be bent, rotating the tube to heat it uniformly.
- Blow into a hose to prevent glass from collapsing and bend the tube by hand.
- Paint or tape portions of tubing to separate letters.
- Repair broken scrolls by replacing them with new sections of tubing.
- Review plans and diagrams to ensure the accuracy of completed neon signs.
- Perform electrical wiring of signs consistent with specifications and electrical codes.
- Maintain an understanding of electrical code requirements for the electrical aspects of signs.
- Demonstrate and maintain an understanding of how different gases work when charging the tubing with gas to create neon signs.
- Assist in quality control and strictly adhere to safety rules.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Monitor parts and materials inventory.
- Assist with final assembly.
- Assist with installation of neon signs.
- Perform sign painting to create a quality finished product.
- Lay vinyl for signs.
- Perform other functions as necessary or as assigned.
Interacts daily with sales and service technician employees at the YESCO facilities to discuss neon sign projects.
Training & QualificationsSix or more months of demonstrated experience in neon sign making, glass blowing, electricity, electronics, assembly, or related areas; or any combination of education, experience, and training that provides the following knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Ability to read, interpret, and apply specification documents, government coding document information, safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
- Ability to apply mathematical calculations regarding electrical requirements.
- Ability to move electrical wiring, equipment, materials, and completed signs.
- Ability to communicate effectively.
Work is performed in a variety of environments both indoors and outdoors, including high, precarious places, with exposure to risk of burns, electrical shock, and moderate noise levels. The employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and climb or balance. The employee must occasionally move objects in excess of 50 lbs.
Specific vision abilities include clarity of vision at 20 inches or less and the ability to adjust the eye to bring an object into sharp focus.
