Purpose Statement:

The General Custodian is responsible for creating an attractive, sanitary and safe environment for students, staff and the public; providing equipment and furniture arrangements for meetings, classroom activities and events; and minimizing property damage, loss and liability exposure; ensuring that assignments are completed in a safe, proper and timely manner and overseeing and supporting assigned part-time custodians in the performance of their assignments.

Essential Functions:

  • Arranges furnishings and equipment for the purpose of providing adequate preparations for meetings, classroom activities and special events.
  • Cleans assigned school facilities (e.g. classrooms, offices, restrooms, grounds, snow removal, graffiti, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining a sanitary, safe and attractive environment.
  • Distributes a variety of items (e.g. supplies, mail, packages, furniture, etc.) for the purpose of distributing materials to the appropriate parties.
  • Inspects facilities for the purpose of ensuring that the site meets district standards for safety and cleanliness, and/or identifying vandalism, equipment breakage, weather damages.
  • Maintains supplies and equipment (e.g. cleaning solutions, paper products, vacuum, mops, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring the availability of items required to properly maintain facilities.
  • Performs maintenance and repairs (e.g. replace ballasts, outlets, locks, change light bulbs, replace washers, oil doors, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring safe and efficient use of facilities.
  • Performs summer maintenance (e.g. strips/waxes floors, moves furniture, painting, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that the site is ready for the coming school year.
  • Repairs furniture and equipment (e.g. sharpening mower blades, changing oil, filters, replacing cords, etc.) for the purpose of ensuring that items are available and in safe working condition.
  • Responds to immediate safety and/or operational concerns including after hours (e.g. facility damage, injured and ill students, alarms, etc.) for the purpose of taking appropriate action to resolve immediate safety issues and maintaining a functioning educational environment.
  • Secures facilities ad grounds for the purpose of minimizing property damage, equipment loss and potential liability.
  • Supports assigned site administrators (e.g. monitor students, after-hours school, community functions, reports smoking in halls, assists police, etc.) for the purpose of assisting them in their work activities.

Attendance is an Essential Function of this Position:

  • Physical presence at the worksite is an essential function of this position. The role requires in-person collaboration, direct interaction with team members, other staff, students, and/or guardians, and access to on-site equipment and resources.

Other Functions:

  • Assists other personnel for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities.
  • Monitors students for the purpose of ensuring a safe and positive school environment and/or supervising student workers.

Job Requirements and Minimum Qualifications (Skills, Knowledge and Abilities):

Skills are required to perform multiple, non-technical tasks with a need to periodically upgrade skills in order to meet changing job conditions. Specific skills required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: operating equipment used in industrial maintenance; adhering to safety practices, managing personnel; handling hazardous materials; planning and managing projects; and preparing and maintaining accurate records.

Knowledge is required to perform basic math, including calculations using fractions, percents, and/or ratios, understand written procedures, write routine documents and speak clearly; and understand multi-step written and oral instructions. Specific knowledge required to satisfactorily perform the functions of the job include: methods of industrial cleaning and safety practices and procedures.
