The Junior Geologist provides research, calculations, field support services, project coordination and report writing support to the Project Manager or Project Engineer/Geologist. Assignments generally may include, but are not limited to the preparation of calculations, research and investigations, field activities such as logging of soil lithology and well borings, conducting field soils/hydrogeological investigations, instrument deployment and data collection, data management and evaluations, preparation of exhibits, descriptions, letters, project memoranda and reports under the direct supervision of a Project Manager or Project Engineer/Geologist.
Position requires good verbal and written communication skills. Position requires contact with firm’s clients and local public agency personnel.
The ideal candidate will have experience in hydrogeology, groundwater modeling, geological/hydrogeological investigations, and site assessments. This role will support the planning, development, and execution of water infrastructure and sustainability projects with an emphasis on subsurface characterization and groundwater systems.
ResponsibilitiesField Investigations
- Conduct site reconnaissance, drilling oversight, and well installation for hydrogeologic projects.
- Collect soil, rock, and groundwater samples in accordance with applicable regulations and safety protocols.
- Perform aquifer tests and groundwater monitoring.
Data Analysis & Interpretation
- Analyze geologic, hydrologic, and geotechnical data to evaluate subsurface conditions and water resource potential.
- Interpret borehole logs, stratigraphy, and cross-sections to support engineering design and remediation efforts.
- Assist in the preparation of groundwater flow models and water balance studies.
Reporting & Documentation
- Prepare technical reports including site characterization studies, feasibility analyses, and remediation plans.
- Document field activities and findings with detailed notes, photographs, and logs.
Regulatory & Environmental Compliance
- Support water supply and wastewater treatment, disposal, and recycled water permitting efforts.
- Ensure project compliance with local, state, and federal water and environmental regulations.
Project Support
- Collaborate with civil, environmental, and geotechnical engineers, geologists, hydrologists, and project managers.
- Participate in project planning, scheduling, and execution.
- Provide technical support for field studies, groundwater and water quality assessments, and water supply evaluations.
Skills and Experience
- Geologist In Training (GIT) certification or eligibility to obtain within 6 months.
- Bachelor’s degree in Geology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Science, or related field (Master’s preferred).
- 2 plus years of professional experience, preferably in a water resources consulting environment.
- OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER training (preferred).
- Proficient in GIS, groundwater modeling software (e.g., MODFLOW), and geotechnical analysis tools.
- Strong writing and communication skills for reporting and client interaction.
- Ability to travel for fieldwork and occasionally work in remote or rugged environments.
- Split between office-based data analysis and reporting, and field-based site investigations.
- Occasional travel to project sites across the region.
