Immediate Supervisor: Building Principal, Supervisor of Facility

Employment Term: 261 days annually

Employment Status: Non‑exempt

Salary: Salary Scale pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8a, Pay Grade C or D commensurate with experience and education level

Evaluation: Performance evaluated annually by the immediate supervisor per state codes and school policies

Job profile

The custodian maintains county buildings in operating excellence, performing custodial duties, repairs, and ensuring the educational program is uninterrupted. The custodian follows supervision from the building administrator and, if applicable, the head custodian.

Responsibilities include maintaining a clean environment, performing minor repairs, securing the building, and maintaining supplies and equipment.

Major Position Responsibilities / Essential Functions
  • Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment, and areas within the building.
  • Cleans classrooms, offices, libraries, restrooms, common areas—chalkboards, dusting, trash removal, vacuuming, washing windows.
  • Scrubs, mops, disinfects, and polishes hard‑surfaced floors in restrooms, cafeterias, hallways, and classrooms.
  • Performs minor maintenance and repairs (plumbing, electrical, painting, general).
  • Immediately reports vandalism, damages, or other property issues to the supervisor.
  • Assumes responsibility for building security—locks, windows, and lights before departing at night.
  • Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment, notifying the head custodian of needs.
  • Complies with County Policies.
  • Communicates effectively—reads, writes, follows written and oral instructions.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of custodian methods, procedures, and safety principles.
  • Uses equipment such as buffers, rug cleaners, vacuums, floor strippers.
  • Maintains good health, physical strength, dexterity; able to work ladders or scaffolds.
  • Works extra hours beyond 40 when permitted by the building principal/supervisor.
  • Performs duties efficiently and productively.
  • Moves furniture and equipment and assists during special events or presentations.
  • Corrects minor safety hazards and reports them promptly.
  • For head custodians: assigns and reviews specific tasks and work areas for coworkers.
  • Demonstrates tact and self‑control when addressing issues.
  • Effectively presents information and responds to questions from administrators, staff, public.
  • Applies concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, proportions to practical situations.
  • Interfaces effectively with other departments, school personnel, maintenance staff, vendors.
  • Passes written and physical tests directly related to the position.
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with students, staff, community.
  • Performs duties in full compliance with all county requirements and Board of Education policies.
  • Reads and complies with labels and safety warnings for cleaning agents and hazardous materials.
  • Performs strenuous physical activity related to custodial duties.
  • Works under minimal supervision; an effective self‑starter.
  • Understands and follows written and oral directions.
  • Completes required training and in‑service as mandated by the county.
  • Solves practical problems and deals with a variety of variables in unsystematic situations.
  • Interprets instructions furnished in written, oral, diagrammatic, or schedule form.
  • Maintains regular attendance.
  • Maintains confidentiality.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent; higher education or trade school preferred.
  • Completed criminal background check per WV Code §18-5-15c.
  • Successful completion of state‑approved competency test(s) per WV Code §18A-4-8e.
  • Ability to multitask and work independently, completing tasks efficiently.
  • Good health and physical fitness; capable of lifting up to 75 lbs and working from ladders or scaffolds.
  • Strong communication skills—reads, writes, follows instructions.
