Position: Custodian III
Work Hours: M – F, 1:00 PM – 9:00 PM (Summer hours may differ per building principal)
Immediate Supervisor: Building Principal, Supervisor of Facility
FLSA Status: Non-exempt
Employment Term: 261 days annually, pursuant to WV Code § 18A‑4‑8
Salary: Pursuant to WV Code § 18A‑4‑8a, in accordance with Jefferson County School’s Salary Scale, Pay Grade C or D commensurate with experience and education level
Evaluation: Performance reviewed annually by the immediate supervisor under WV State Code § 18A‑2‑12, WV State Board Policy 5314, and Jefferson County School’s Evaluation Policy for Service Personnel
Job ProfileThe custodian keeps the county buildings in a state of operating excellence, ensuring no problems or interruptions to the educational program. The custodian performs assigned custodial duties and repairs, and receives supervision from the building administrator, and if applicable, the head custodian.
Major Position Responsibilities / Essential Functions- Cleans and preserves designated spaces and equipment in the building.
- Cleans classrooms, offices, libraries, restrooms, and common areas including chalkboards, dusting, emptying trash receptacles, vacuuming, and washing windows.
- Scrubs, mops, disinfects, and polishes hard‑surfaces floors in restrooms, cafeteria, hallways, classrooms, etc., as required.
- Performs minor maintenance and repairs.
- Immediately reports any vandalism or other school property damage to the supervisor.
- Assumes responsibility for the security of the building—locks doors and windows, and turns lights off as needed before leaving at night.
- Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment and informs the head custodian of needs in advance.
- Complies with County Policies.
- Communicates, reads, writes, and follows written and oral instructions.
- Demonstrates knowledge of custodian methods, procedures, and safety principles.
- Skilled in operating equipment such as buffers, rug cleaners, vacuums, and floor strippers.
- Maintains good health and physical fitness; capable of heavy work, ladder, and scaffold use.
- Allowed to work over 40 hours per week with supervisor’s permission.
- Performs minor plumbing, electrical, painting, and other repairs.
- Efficiently and productively completes duties.
- Moves furniture and equipment and assists in special events.
- Corrects minor safety hazards immediately and refers major hazards to the supervisor.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- When applicable, assigns and reviews tasks for custodians under the head custodian.
- Demonstrates tact, self‑control, and effective communication with staff, students, and the public.
- Applies basic math concepts (fractions, percentages, ratios) to practical tasks.
- Interfaces effectively with departments, school personnel, maintenance staff, and external contacts.
- Passes written and physical tests directly related to the position.
- Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with students, staff, and community.
- Complies fully with all county and Board of Education policies.
- Reads and follows labels and safety warnings on cleaning agents and hazardous materials.
- Performs strenuous physical activity related to custodial duties.
- Works under minimal or no supervision; is a self‑starter.
- Understands and follows written and oral directions.
- Completes necessary training and in‑service as required by the county.
- Solves practical problems and handles variable situations efficiently.
- Interprets instructions supplied in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code § 18A‑2‑5.
- Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code § 18‑5‑15c.
- Meet the definition of “Qualifications” in WV Code 18A‑4‑8b.
- Demonstrated competency on WV Code § 18A‑4‑8e state‑approved competency tests.
- Ability to multitask and work independently.
- Ability to complete tasks efficiently and accurately.
- Good health and dexterity; physical strength for heavy work; ladder and scaffold use.
