Job Description – Painter II – Facilities & Services (29490)

Painter II is a position within the Central Zone Painting Department at West Virginia University. The role assists the Operation Manager and the Trade Specialist in painting, drywall repair, carpentry, and janitorial tasks related to campus maintenance and repair projects.

About the Opportunity

Under the direction of the Operation Manager, the duties require the individual to assist in a variety of painting tasks related to maintenance and repair of buildings, including moving furniture and performing janitorial duties throughout the campus.

What You’ll Do
  • Assist the Trade Specialist in applying paints, varnishes, shellacs, urethanes, enamels, and stains using rollers, brushes, sponges, and other equipment.
  • Assist with plaster and drywall repair to ensure smooth surfaces for paint.
  • Help finish and refinish wooden items such as furniture, cabinets, doors, and door frames, including sanding and cleaning.
  • Assist in removal and replacement of electrical switch and receptacle covers and disassembly/assembly of electrical fixtures.
  • Assist in carpentry projects such as wood repairs, drywall sanding, glue cove base, wall cleaning, and installation and removal of wall hangings.
  • Assemble scaffoldings (rolling, pipe, stretch-boards, kick-boards).
  • Operate power tools such as sanders, drills, saws, and power washers.
  • Work from ladders and scaffoldings.
  • Provide janitorial services related to painting and repair projects, including sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and resetting furniture.
  • Assist in installation of dispensers across campus.
  • Operate walk-behind and riding scrubbers, high-speed buffers, automated carpet cleaners, and related equipment.
Work Schedule

Monday through Friday, 6 am – 2 pm.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or equivalent combined education and directly related work experience.
  • Minimum six months of experience in painting, operating power tools, working from ladders, and drywall repair.
  • Any equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
  • All qualifications must be met by the time of employment.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Knowledge of painting, drywall repair, custodial methods, procedures, and safety principles.
  • Basic building maintenance and labor activities knowledge.
  • Ability to operate basic labor supporting equipment, power tools, and commercial custodial equipment.
  • Interpersonal skills to interact with Trade Specialists, supervisors, and colleagues.
  • Reading, writing, and basic math skills in English.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow oral and written instructions and communicate them to others.
  • Ability to function as an assistant to a Trade Specialist.
  • Maintain proper attendance and punctuality.
Physical Demands
  • Long periods standing and walking.
  • Lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Moving furniture and unloading supplies.
Requirements
  • Valid driver’s license.
