Half‑Time Custodian III
Custodian III positions keep county buildings operating at the highest level of cleanliness and safety, ensuring that education programs run without interruption. The custodian performs assigned duties, repairs, and maintains security and supplies in support of Jefferson County Schools.
Major Position Responsibilities / Essential Functions- Maintains regular attendance.
- Cleans and preserves designated spaces, equipment, and facilities.
- Cleans classrooms, offices, libraries, restrooms, and common areas, including chalkboards, dusting, emptying trash receptacles, vacuuming, and washing windows.
- Scrubs, mops, disinfects, and polishes hard‑surfaced floors in restrooms, cafeteria, hallways, classrooms, etc., as required.
- Performs minor maintenance and repairs.
- Immediately reports any vandalism or other school property damage to supervisor.
- Assumes responsibility for building security—locks doors and windows, turns off lights before leaving the building.
- Maintains an inventory of supplies and equipment and informs the head custodian of needs in advance.
- Complies with County Policies.
- Communicates effectively, reads, writes, and follows written and oral instructions.
- Demonstrates knowledge of custodian methods, procedures, and safety principles.
- Operates machinery such as buffers, rug cleaners, vacuums, and floor strippers.
- Exhibits good health, dexterity, and physical strength to perform heavy work, including work from ladders or scaffolds.
- May work over 40 hours per week with permission from the building principal or supervisor.
- Performs minor plumbing, electrical, painting, and repair tasks.
- Moves furniture and equipment and assists in special events or presentations.
- Corrects safety hazards and reports major hazards to building supervisor.
- Maintains confidentiality.
- When acting as head custodian, assigns and reviews tasks for custodians.
- Specifies ability to demonstrate tact and self‑control in addressing issues.
- Effectively presents information and responds to questions from administrators, staff, and the public.
- Applies concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.
- Interfaces effectively with other departments, school personnel, other maintenance staff, and business contacts.
- Passes written and physical tests related to the position.
- Builds and maintains effective working relationships with students, staff, and community.
- Complies with all county and Board of Education policies.
- Reads and follows labels and safety warnings on cleaning agents and hazardous materials.
- Performs strenuous physical activity related to custodial duties.
- Works independently; self‑starter with minimal supervision.
- Understands and follows both written and oral directions.
- Completes required training and in‑service as needed.
- Solves practical problems and adapts to variable situations.
- Interprets instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
- High School Diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A‑2‑5.
- Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18‑5‑15c.
- Meet the definition of “Qualifications” in WV Code §18A‑4‑8b.
- Demonstrated competency in state‑approved competency test(s) as required.
- Ability to multitask and work independently, completing tasks efficiently and accurately.
- Demonstrated teamwork and self‑management skills.
- Nominal customer‑service aptitude.
- Good communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to adhere to health and safety regulations.
- Proficiency with custodial equipment and cleaning agents.
- Physical ability to lift, move, and operate necessary tools and equipment.
- Willingness to work extended hours when necessary.
While performing the duties of this job the employee may frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds of materials. Specific vision abilities required include close vision to read handwritten or typed material and the ability to adjust focus. The position requires meeting multiple demands from several people and interacting with the public and other staff.
Work EnvironmentThe work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Temperature can range from below freezing when working outdoors to in excess of 90°F when working in furnace rooms, kitchen areas, or on rooftops. Work surfaces can be slippery when mopping or stripping floors or completing snow removal. Noise levels are moderate to loud (60–90 dB).
The employee continuously interacts with colleagues, the public, vendors, school staff, and students.
