The Day Shift Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly environment at Ramage Elementary School. The employee performs routine custodial duties during the school day, responds to immediate cleaning and maintenance needs, assists staff and students as appropriate, and helps ensure that the facility is prepared for daily instructional activities, meetings, and special events.
Essential duties and responsibilities include:
- Cleaning and sanitizing classrooms, offices, hallways, restrooms, cafeterias, common areas, and other assigned spaces.
- Sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, stripping, waxing, and maintaining floors as needed.
- Cleaning windows, doors, walls, furniture, fixtures, and other building surfaces.
- Emptying trash and recycling containers and disposing of waste properly.
- Restocking restroom supplies, including soap, paper towels, and toilet tissue.
- Responding promptly to spills, accidents, illness-related cleanup, and other sanitation concerns occurring during the school day.
- Assisting with cafeteria cleanup and other high-traffic areas as assigned.
- Monitoring the building and grounds for safety hazards, damage, vandalism, plumbing concerns, electrical issues, or needed repairs and reporting concerns to the principal or maintenance department.
- Performing minor maintenance tasks that are within the employee's training and assigned responsibilities.
- Assisting with setting up and removing tables, chairs, equipment, and materials for meetings, assemblies, programs, and special events.
- Helping maintain entrances, sidewalks, steps, and exterior areas by removing litter, leaves, snow, ice, and other hazards as needed.
- Using custodial supplies, chemicals, tools, and equipment safely and in accordance with manufacturer instructions and applicable safety procedures.
- Maintaining custodial closets, storage areas, equipment, and supplies in a clean, secure, and organized condition.
- Securing assigned areas and assisting with monitoring doors, entrances, and building access during the workday.
- Cooperating with school administrators, teachers, students, maintenance personnel, and other employees to support the efficient operation of the school.
- Maintaining confidentiality and demonstrating professional conduct when interacting with students, employees, parents, and members of the public.
- Following all Boone County Board of Education policies, procedures, safety requirements, and applicable state and federal laws.
- Performing other duties as assigned by the principal, Director of Maintenance, superintendent, or designee.
Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent, as required by applicable West Virginia law and policy.
- Must meet all requirements established by the West Virginia Department of Education and the Boone County Board of Education for the custodial classification.
- Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
- Knowledge of basic cleaning procedures, sanitation practices, and the safe use of custodial equipment and chemicals.
- Ability to work independently and cooperatively with others.
- Ability to communicate appropriately with students, staff, administrators, and the public.
- Successful completion of required background checks and employment screenings.
Physical Requirements:
- The employee must be able to stand and walk for extended periods.
- Bend, stoop, kneel, reach, climb, push, and pull.
- Lift, carry, and move custodial supplies, furniture, equipment, and other materials.
- Safely operate custodial tools and equipment.
- Work indoors and outdoors in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
- Perform duties involving exposure to dust, cleaning products, bodily fluids, waste materials, and other conditions commonly associated with custodial work.

Work Schedule and Terms of Employment:
The employee will work a day-shift schedule established by the principal and Boone County Schools. Contract length, salary, benefits, and other employment conditions will be determined by the Boone County Board of Education in accordance with the applicable salary schedule, West Virginia law, and Board policy.
Evaluation:
Performance will be evaluated in accordance with Boone County Board of Education policy and applicable West Virginia laws and regulations.
