Custodian III
Position available at Berkeley County Schools, Mountain Ridge Intermediate, Gerrardstown, West Virginia.
Job OverviewCleaning and maintenance of district buildings and grounds, scheduled 2:00 pm‑10:00 pm, Monday‑Friday.
Terms of Employment240 days, starting July 21, 2026.
Responsibilities- Communicates, collaborates, and cooperates with colleagues, supervisors, and students.
- Keeps assigned work area neat and clean at all times.
- Vacuums, shampoos, sweeps, mops, waxes, polishes, and scrubs floor surfaces.
- Cleans and dusts furnishings.
- Washes windows and mirrors.
- Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, showers, and locker rooms.
- Keeps cleaning equipment clean and in proper operating condition.
- Cleans chalkboards and whiteboards on a regular basis.
- Collects trash and places it in trash collection receptacles.
- Moves furniture and equipment as necessary.
- Sets up and tears down for special events.
- Shovels snow as needed from steps and sidewalks.
- Applies sand and ice‑melting materials to steps and sidewalks as needed.
- Reports items that are in need of repair.
- Assures that exterior doors are locked in accordance with building schedules, all doors and windows are secure, and lights and equipment are shut off.
- Raises and/or lowers flags at the prescribed times.
- Keeps grounds free of trash, mows lawns, and trims trees as directed.
Education: High school diploma or GED preferred.
Certificates/Examinations: Pass WV Minimum Objective and Performance School Competency Exam for Custodian.

Skills:
Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; write routine reports and correspondence; speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.
Mathematical
Skills:
Ability to add and subtract two‑digit numbers and to multiply and divide with tens and hundreds; perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance.
Reasoning Ability: Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists; interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Skills and Abilities:
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff and the community; perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies.
Employee is regularly required to stand, walk, use hands and fingers to handle or feel objects, tools, or controls, and talk or hear. Frequently reaches with hands and arms. Occasionally required to sit. Frequently must squat, stoop, or kneel, reach above the head and reach forward. Continuously uses hand strength to grasp tools and climbs on ladders. Often bends or twists at the neck and trunk more than the average person while performing duties.
Frequently lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds such as cleaning supplies, pails, and unloading trucks; occasionally lifts or moves up to 90 pounds; sometimes pushes or pulls items such as tables, bleachers, or scrubbing machines. Specific vision abilities required include close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
Employee regularly works indoors and occasionally works outdoors. Works near or with moving mechanical equipment. May occasionally work with toxic or caustic chemicals such as petroleum products, degreasers, and sprays. Must meet deadlines with severe time constraints. Noise level is usually moderate.
EvaluationJob performance is evaluated in accordance with district guidelines by the building supervisor.
Additional Notes- Essential personnel in a state of emergency include custodians who may be required to report to work at the discretion of the superintendent or his designee.
- May be required to work an alternative work schedule when school is not in session or when staff or students are not present for instruction purposes.
