General Summary

The Maintenance Technician II serves as the lead technical maintenance professional for the Ice Centre and is responsible for the inspection, maintenance, repair, troubleshooting, and continuous operation of the facility’s mechanical systems, refrigeration systems, HVAC equipment, and building infrastructure. This position performs advanced preventive and corrective maintenance, coordinates maintenance projects, and provides guidance and technical support to other maintenance staff and part-time employees.

The position exercises considerable independent judgment and works with minimal supervision to ensure a safe, efficient, and well‑maintained facility for staff and the public.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs advanced diagnostics, troubleshooting, repair, and preventive maintenance on facility mechanical systems, refrigeration equipment, HVAC systems, plumbing, electrical components, and ice resurfacing equipment.
  • Inspects facility systems and proactively identifies maintenance needs by cleaning, lubricating, adjusting, repairing, or replacing worn or damaged components.
  • Serves as the lead technician for the operation and maintenance of the Ice Centre refrigeration plant and ice‑making systems, ensuring safe and efficient operation.
  • Performs routine and major maintenance on the Ice Centre, including, but not limited to, painting, roofing, drywall, tile, flooring, concrete, doors, windows, locks, motors, belts, pumps, bearings, hinges, and related building components.
  • Performs seasonal startup and shutdown procedures for building systems, including electrical, water, gas, HVAC, refrigeration, and related infrastructure.
  • Coordinates and performs ice maintenance operations, including ice resurfacing, edging, ice painting, and installation or removal of logos and markings as needed.
  • Coordinates maintenance activities with outside contractors and vendors and monitors work for compliance with District standards.
  • Assists management in developing maintenance schedules, preventive maintenance programs, equipment replacement plans and long‑range facility improvement strategies.
  • Operates and performs maintenance on specialized equipment including, but not limited to, Zamboni ice resurface rs, ice edgers, lifts, compressors, pumps, generators, and other mechanical equipment.
  • Operates hand tools, power tools, diagnostic equipment, and specialized maintenance equipment in a safe manner.
  • Coordinates required inspections and testing for fire alarm systems, fire extinguishers, elevators, sprinkler systems, backflow prevention devices, and other life safety systems.
  • Responds to emergency maintenance situations and determines appropriate corrective actions to minimize operational disruptions.
  • Assists in diagnosing and resolving complex facility maintenance issues involving electrical, plumbing, HVAC, refrigeration, structural, and mechanical systems.
  • Provides technical guidance, training, and mentoring to part‑time employees, Zamboni operators, and others responsible for facility maintenance and ice operations.
  • Assists in establishing and communicating facility safety procedures, emergency response protocols, and building evacuation procedures.
  • Proficient in using computers, tablets, and maintenance management software to complete work orders, inspections, and documentation.
  • Maintains accurate maintenance records, inspection logs, and work orders.
  • Investigates and responds to facility maintenance concerns and customer complaints as assigned.
  • Participates in training sessions, workshops, staff meetings, and professional development opportunities.
  • May work on District‑wide maintenance projects outside the Ice Centre as assigned.
  • Performs all duties in a customer service‑oriented manner.
  • Assists with custodial duties when operationally necessary.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required
  • Above average knowledge of refrigeration systems, HVAC equipment, mechanical systems, and building maintenance practices.
  • Ability to diagnose and troubleshoot complex mechanical and facility issues and recommend effective solutions.
