Westmont, IL – Part-time Fire Inspector – Fire Department

Our Fire Inspectors play an integral part in keeping Westmont a safe community in which to live, work and play. This position provides the opportunity to deliver customer service and knowledge to our residents and businesses through public education, community engagement and inspections.

Under the general supervision of the Director of the Fire Prevention Bureau, the Part-time Fire Inspector performs inspections of commercial, industrial and residential buildings to ensure compliance with Village fire and building codes and/or ordinances as well as engages in fire/life safety education activities for our schools and the general public.

• Spending time out in the community conducting fire and life safety inspections in businesses, schools and multi-family residential buildings, talking directly with owners, managers and staff about hazards and how to correct them
• Reviewing fire protection and life safety features in buildings (like exits, alarms, sprinklers, and extinguishers) and clearly explaining code requirements in a way that makes sense to non-fire-code people
• Following up on violations by working with property representatives, contractors and design professionals to help bring buildings into compliance and improve overall safety
• Providing fire and life safety education to the public through school programs, station tours, community events and safety campaigns, tailoring the message appropriately for children, adults and older adults.

• Background in fire service, building inspections, construction, code enforcement, safety or a related field where you’ve had to apply rules and standards in real-world situations
• Experience working directly with the public — especially in roles where you had to explain technical information, handle complaints or navigate difficult conversations professionally and calmly
• Education or training in fire science, fire prevention, emergency services, public safety, education or communications that supports both the technical and public-facing sides of the job
• Teaching, presenting, or leading groups (formally or informally), such as classroom instruction, training coworkers, coaching or community outreach
• Using computer systems to write reports, track activities, maintain records and communicate clearly through email and basic documents or spreadsheets

This is a part-time, non-exempt (hourly) position, expected to work 20 hours per week. The hiring range is $33.03/hour – $39.98/hour DOQ and certifications.
