Instructional Assistant - EL (Grant) (WHS)

Grade 4, Step 1, $TBD

10 month, temporary & grant funded effective August 10, 2026. Contract may be renewed annually pending grant funding.

This work involves close interaction with staff, students and parents/guardians, with the primary emphasis on the implementation of specialized educational programs. The Instructional Assistant - EL works under the direction of EL certified staff, must react appropriately in crisis situations and exhibit initiative, creativity, and a collaborative team approach. The individual must work within established systems and procedures, exhibit organizational skills, exercise independent judgment, and maintain confidentiality in the performance of duties.

• Must have or obtain State and NCLB approved Paraprofessional designation in accordance with Illinois State Board of Education requirements.
• Must have physical ability to lift/move supplies, materials and office equipment up to 40 lbs.
• Must sit at workstation for extended periods of time and/or move frequently from workstation to various other areas of the building.
• Must organize and prioritize workflow.
• Must be proficient in the use of computers, office practices, procedures and office equipment.
• Must project a positive image of the district to students, staff and parents, and exhibit a positive employee attitude.
• Must demonstrate appropriate interpersonal skills, and communicate clearly and respectfully with students, staff, parents, visitors and the general public.
• Must have awareness of a variety of student needs including physical and social‑emotional needs.
• Should possess strong English language skills in composition, literature, reading, and/or general studies.
• Bilingual preferred.

• Assisting students in the classroom under the direction of certified staff by providing individualized or group instruction, monitoring students’ work in and out of the classroom, explaining written or verbal instructions, and helping students understand cultural differences.
• Assisting certified staff by translating classroom material, monitoring and administering assessments, implementing appropriate school technology, reviewing student information systems including attendance, IEP, 504 and health information, and supporting and supervising students during non‑academic settings.
• Serving as a liaison for the EL team by interpreting for non‑English speaking parents, working with staff to help understand cultural differences, translating printed material, and participating in appropriate professional development activities to enhance job performance.
• Cultivating and developing inclusive and equitable working relationships with staff, students and community members.
