Wieland is hiring a Rolling Mill Operator (Level
1) who will safely and efficiently operate the RM-1 Rolling Mill with a team member (Operator
2) using established metallurgical guidelines. The operator will assist with maintaining a production schedule for the equipment that includes processing material, material handling, tooling changeovers, and PM’s. This role is located in Wheeling, IL and will be fully on‑site.
Hourly Pay Range: $21/hr to $26/hr
Work Schedule: 1st shift – 6 AM to 2 PM

Responsibilities- Work independently and as part of a team with safety as the number one priority. Properly follow company and OSHA safety procedures. Bring problems to the attention of the Supervisor, Safety, or HR.
- Safely operate the equipment on and around RM1, including coil changeovers, roll changes (work & backup), monitoring the quality of material running, and basic maintenance. Handle material.
- Loading and unloading coils on machine.
- Setting up the equipment for production.
- Following and adjusting schedule developed by the Planning Dept.
- Frontline line troubleshooting of RM-1 and its associated equipment and communicating needs/issues to the Production Management & Maintenance Dept. as they arise.
- Performing in‑process inspection, preparing and visually inspecting samples for QA; reducing scrap and monitoring material quality.
- Cross‑train in other areas of the Production Dept. and train other employees as RM1 Operator-1.
- Ensure a safe and environmentally responsible plant according to the applicable regulations and maintain a safe, clean & organized work area.
- Maintain 5S improvements.
- Cooperate with other areas to continuously improve quality, machine uptime, efficiency, and productivity.
- High School diploma or equivalent is required.
- Previous experience with heavy metals or similar manufacturing is required.
- Ability to work with calipers, micrometers, and other types of testing equipment is required.
- Ability to work under pressure with high stress levels is required.
- Maintain production schedule.
- Monitor material quality, including flatness, gauge, hardness, grain size, and surface finish.
- Must be able to learn and safely operate an overhead crane, forklift, and pallet jacks (motorized and manual).
- Willing to work on short notice, volunteer overtime, and/or required overtime as needed.
- Ensure proper identification of coils and samples.
- Achieve production throughput, yield, and scrap goals.
- Maintain a positive attitude in a team environment.

- Involves periods of standing, walking, and negotiating stairs, ladders, elevated catwalks, and platforms in hot or cold production environments on slippery surfaces for the purpose of directing operations and evaluating situations.
