Job SummaryPerform custodial duties and minor repairs in county schools, ensuring buildings operate in an excellent condition that supports the educational program. Duties include cleaning, disinfecting, maintenance, alarm management, and assisting in scheduling school activities.
Performance Responsibilities- Keep buildings, sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat, clean, and free of litter at all times.
- Disinfect water fountains, restrooms, and sinks daily.
- Wash windows inside and outside at least twice per year or as needed.
- Perform ground‑keeping duties as assigned.
- Maintain all floors clean and in good condition, including waxing.
- Secure windows and doors, turn off lights (except emergency), and arm alarm systems each day.
- Regulate heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to maintain economical use and proper temperature.
- Perform minor maintenance repairs; report major repairs to the principal.
- Move furniture or equipment for activities as directed by the principal.
- Remain on premises during school hours and authorized off‑school hours, ensuring readiness for night or other events.
- Conduct ongoing general maintenance, upkeep, and repair.
- Display flag (state and country).
- Report safety hazards and maintain safe working conditions.
- Service carpeted areas.
- Maintain inventory of supplies and equipment, informing the head custodian or principal of needs.
- Comply with county policies.
- Seek permission to work overtime beyond 40 hours per week.
- Correct or report minor safety hazards promptly and refer major hazards to the supervisor.
- Maintain positive work habits and relationships with students, staff, and the community.
- Adhere to the Employee Code of Conduct per Mineral County School's Policy 4210.
- Arrive punctually, maintain regular attendance, and perform duties efficiently and productively.
- Continuously improve skills and keep updated with job requirements.
- Perform duties as assigned by immediate supervisor(s).
- Meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A‑4‑8b; demonstrate competency via state‑approved tests (WFV Code §18A‑4‑8e).
- Undergo criminal background check in accordance with WV Code §18‑5‑15c or §18A‑3‑10.
- Demonstrate: ability to present information, pass written/physical tests, establish working relationships, read safety labels, perform strenuous physical activity, work independently, understand written and oral directions, complete required training, solve practical problems, and interpret written, oral or diagrammatic instructions.
- Undergo reasonable accommodations for disabilities as necessary.
- Maintain sobriety; alcohol or controlled substances that affect safety or judgment are not tolerated.
Frequent stooping, reaching, standing, walking, bending, and lifting up to 75 pounds. Work environments may range from below freezing to over 90°F; surfaces can be slippery; noise can reach 60‑90 dB.
Custodian IV Addendum- Provide effective leadership and supervision to custodians.
- Implement systems to monitor productivity.
- Schedule and execute summer and inclement‑weather/snow removal activities.
- Observe quality of custodial services via walkthroughs.
- Maintain open communication among custodians, administration, and county supervisors.
Applicants must be capable of performing duties with or without reasonable accommodation. Employees with recent unsatisfactory evaluations, interview performance, or unfavorable references are not eligible. Those dismissed or whose contracts were non‑renewed for cause by another district are also ineligible.
