The custodian maintains county buildings in a state of operational excellence to support education. Duties include custodial services, minor maintenance and repairs, and receiving supervision from building administrators and the head custodian.
Performance Responsibilities- Maintain regular attendance.
- Clean and preserve designated spaces, equipment, and facilities.
- Clean classrooms, offices, media centers, restrooms, and common areas, including chalkboards, dusting, trash removal, vacuuming, and window washing.
- Scrub, mop, disinfect, and polish hard‑surfaced floors in restrooms, cafeteria, hallways, and classrooms.
- Perform minor maintenance and repairs.
- Report vandalism or other property concerns to supervisor.
- Ensure building security: lock doors and windows, and turn off lights before leaving.
- Maintain an inventory of supplies and equipment; inform head custodian of needs.
- Comply with County Policies.
- Obtain permission to work over 40 hours per week.
- Handle minor plumbing, electrical, painting, and repair tasks.
- Move furniture, equipment, and assist with special events or presentations.
- Correct minor safety hazards or refer major hazards to supervisor.
- Maintain confidentiality.
- Assist head custodian in assigning and reviewing tasks for custodians.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5; criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c; meet the definition of "Qualifications" in WV Code §18A-4-8b; demonstrate competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state‑approved competency test) as required.
- Effectively present information and respond to inquiries from administrators, staff, and the public.
- Apply basic mathematical concepts to practical situations.
- Interface effectively with other departments, school personnel, maintenance staff, and external contacts.
- Pass written and physical tests related to the position.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
- Perform duties in full compliance with all county requirements and Board of Education policies.
- Read and comply with labels and safety warnings on cleaning agents and hazardous materials.
- Perform strenuous physical activity related to custodial duties.
- Work independently; be an effective self‑starter.
- Understand and follow written and verbal directions.
- Complete necessary training and in‑service as required by the county.
- Solve practical problems and handle variable situations with limited standardization.
- Interpret instructions in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
Tasks involve frequent stooping, reaching, standing, walking, lifting, pulling, pushing, grasping, talking, hearing, seeing, and climbing a ladder at least six feet. Employees may frequently lift or move up to 75 pounds. Vision requirements include close vision for reading handwritten or typed material and focus adjustment. The role requires meeting multiple demands and interacting with the public and staff.
Work EnvironmentTemperature varies from outdoor conditions to over 90°F in furnaces, kitchens, or rooftops. Work surfaces may become slippery when mopping. Noise levels are moderate to loud (60–90 dB).
